I just checked in for our flights tomorrow and the boarding pass says "tsa check" ( the green check mark not the printed word) Does this mean we were randomly selected to go through that line?

Yes but only those that have it on their specific boarding pass may go through that line.
Meaning if you have it on yours but someone else in your party does not they must go through the regular security line.
You may also go through the regular security line if you'd rather stay with your party.

Thanks. Both my husband and i got it so we will definitely take advantage. What exactly is the difference?

You can leave on your shoes and a light jacket. You'll go though the metal detector, not the scanner. You can leave your laptop and liquids in your bag.

That is, if your airport actually has a separate TSA precheck line.

Yes, that means you can go through the TSA Pre line. We fly Southwest and DW seems to always get selected. I have been selected a couple of times and it is very convenient when going through busy airports like MCO. It is quite nice that you both were selected. On our recent flight out of MCO I was selected and my wife was not. I decided to wait in the standard line with her. One of these days we will just have to breakdown and spend the $85 (times two) for TSA Precheck.

Assuming your shoes don't have metal in them.

The "TSA PreCheck police" (AKA as self appointed experts in line who want to prove they are knowlegable) yell at me every time I take off my shoes. I just smile as I know they will set off the alarm if I wear them.

(And of course those "police" then go through the line and appear shocked that "their" cell phone set off the alarm or that "they" are expected to take the $10 in coins out of their pocket. IMHO the myth that the lines are held up by "newbies" is just that a myth. The 'elite' who think 'the rules don't apply to me' are just as guilty LOL!)

In the TSA PreCheck line, you don't have to remove your shoes, unless they have metal in them. You do not need to take your laptop out of your bag, and you can wear a light jacket through the metal detector. Liquids can stay inside your luggage, too.

I have precheck. On my last trip, I was randomly selected to go through the scanner.

I have to go through the scanner due to an artificial knee. The belt comes off then as well.

I have a PreCheck membership because I fly once every month or two. It's totally worth it just for the Orlando airport. Always such a mess with families, foreign tourists, etc.

I do recommend taking everything out of your pockets and removing jewelry, despite them saying you don't have to. I've had the detector go off and had to go through the scanner with stuff in my pockets which triggers the procedure for a pat-down.

I also randomly got TSA pre-check when I flew Southwest just last week. It kinda surprised me because I though I'd read somewhere that TSA pre-check wasn't being randomly assigned any more, that you only got it if you'd paid for it. Maybe Southwest has some "in" with TSA:)

Nah, it's just that they've been lying about that for ages now. :)

Kids 12 and under can go through with an adult with it on their boarding pass, even if the kids don't have it. Not relevant for the OP, but for lurkers. :)

I have gold status with United and always get it for me and anyone flying with me. It's great. Precheck goes so much faster.

To expand on this, place anything you normally carry in your pockets into a secure location in your bag, like a zippered inner pocket. This advice applies no matter which line you are going through. I think it is a valid precaution in case you are pulled aside for any additional screening and/or you end up getting a pat-down.
