Surprisingly Scary??

We're taking my little cousins (12 and 10) to WDW for their first trip. The youngest gets scared pretty easily, so I'm trying to prepare her for some of the expected scary rides (EE, ToT, etc.).

But...were your kids ever scared of a ride you never expected them to be? I'm just having these visions that for some reason she freaks out on Peter Pan or something similar and doesn't want to ride anything the rest of the trip because she was surprised by something.

Yea- My DD5 will ride TOT and BTMR but is petrified of Goofy's baby roller coaster. It makes no sense at all.

Snow White's Scary Adventure. The word "scary" is in the title for a reason. I've heard of people who go on it because it's there in Fantasyland with the other little kid rides....and get scared to death.

Only 2 things at WDW have ever scared my daughter:

1.) DeVine. A huge moving human/tree thing. Enough said.

2.) The Great Movie Ride. Oddly enough, not the Alien scene though. She was scared of the Indiana Jones scene. She really thought that our CM had been burned.

For my daughter it was haunted mansion. For my 9 yo niece it's ToT. My niece expected to be scared of many of the rides, but we did a little preparation before our trip with her. She watched to wdw vacation dvd (over and over ) and that seemed to help because she got to see many of the rides. We also played wdw park cds with music from the rides. She liked all the songs so much that she was actually looking forward to the rides. I think it's a good idea for you for you to prepare your cousin. I think it's the unknown aspect that kids often find scary.

Remember that there are a lot of ride videos on youtube. It may help her to watch some of the rides there first.

Ditto the Great Movie Ride. It's dark and my 5 year old thought the bullets were a real gunfight (old time gangster scene in beginning).

Dinosaur at Animal Kingdom had me closing MY eyes! Definitely not for the faint of heart as it's very jerky motion-wise and there are lots of big dino teeth coming at you.

Stitch's Great Escape was HORRIBLE. Dark and smelly - made a whole lot of kids cry and gag. Not fun AT ALL!

I was going to suggest the same thing. If you think that they will be afraid of something, let them watch the video so that they will know about what to expect before they get there.

I always play down anything bad or scary just by talking to them about it. I normally say something like "They do a wonderful job making this look real" or "There is a huge dinosaur in here but just remember, it's not real and it won't get you". Something along those lines. I hate to spoil it but we learned the hard way with my nephew. We took him into It's Tough to be a Bug and he freaked. He wouldn't ride anything the rest of the trip. It's just better to spoil it a little than to have them get scared and spoil your vacation.

Oh jeez...where do I begin? There a ride with Figment the little dinosaur about imagination, I believe. At the end the whole set breaks out, it's extremely loud and there a big gust of wind. I'm pretty sure my daughter, who rode it when she was 13 months old, still needs therapy for that one.

The Great Movie Ride, A Bugs Life, Pirates of the Carribbean...my kids basically hate anything dark and/or loud. It was incredibly frustrating a few years back.

The Great Movie Ride in MGM freaked my DD when the alien came down from the ceiling. It was the first ride we went on and it was hard to get her on anything else the entire trip. Even Small World was a challenge to get her on.

Thanks! I hadn't really thought of Great Movie Ride. I'll have to be sure to explain all that to her first.

I don't think I'm even going to try to take them on Dinosaur. Or let me rephrase...I hope they don't want to go on Dinosaur because it freaks me out! I have a great pic of everyone kinda laughing/screaming at the big dinosaur when he jumps out and I'm cowering in the corner of the car with my arms covering my head...

My dd loved Haunted Mansion, but freaked on Peter PAN

remember when i was little it was the haunted manison for me. never wanted to ride that thing ever. but think that was the only thing

No rational explanation, but my sister has always been semi-afraid of the Dumbo ride.

Loves ANY other ride, but has weird qualms about that one.

bug's life or How I shrunk the audience can be scary/creepy for some...the scents and the things running past your legs or under you seat can freak people out (young and old!).

Snow White is definitely a scary one on my list - I HATED that as a child!!! I was surprised my DD didn't freak out last year, but I do know they did tame it down a few years back. The witch doesn't appear as many times as she used to...

All in all, let them be the guide and choose. If they want to try it, I say let them. My DS never liked any thrill rides, not even small kiddie coasters. We get to MK and he wants to ride Space Mountain. I said okay...while he didn't LOVE it, he was happy he went and now likes more coasters (couldn't get him off Thunder Mountain or Goofy's Barnstormer).

Both DD and DS (DD is my coaster girl) wanted to do Tower of Terror (they were 6 at the time of the trip). We watched it and they wanted to go. I said okay again...they wll both tell you (very quickly) that was NOT a fun ride and they don't want to do it again.

But, they wanted to go and I don't want to get them scared if they feel they are up for it.

DD's favorite ride was Everest in AK (went on 3 times) and she was very upset that she was too short to ride Rockin Rollercoaster. Unfortunately, I don't think she'll be tall enough for that on the next trip either.

YESSSSSSSSS!!! the Winnie the Pooh ride! it was awful! the heffalumps scared dd half out of her wits and she was useless the rest of the day... would not go on anything even remotely dark... cried and cried and cried... a HUGE stuffed Pooh didn't even help!!

she was about 6yo at the time (she's since gotten over it, now that she's 14, but i'd say it took a good 4 or 5 years!)

I didn't even think about the Winnie the Pooh ride. It doesn't bother my DD at all, but DH is totally freaked out by it!

Only at the beg of Haunted Mansion (in the room not on the actual ride) did my 3yr old freak out. He looked up (I didnt remember that being up there so I didnt know to distract him) and saw the body hanging and freaked. Other than that he did fine (even on Snow White and Peter Pan).

The stitch ride (it goes dark for a while and lots of noises durring the dark)and snow whites scary adventure.. FREAKED OUT.
These are the ones you do baby swap on, or just forget em until next time imo. I almost think it depends on each kid though. There are some that may freak at say..pirates, but wont at haunted mansion

At 10, no, neither of mine was scared of any ride or attraction. I would think that your nieces should be fine at their ages, on everything.
