Hey there,
If you read the first post of my PTR you can see the full story of why we surprised my kids last September. Basically we weren't going to go and told them that, then things changed to where we could go. My dh said there was no way I could keep it a secret, so of course, that's like a dare!! I kept it a secret for over 200 days!
My big thing was I didn't want to lie to my kids, I also didn't want to promise them something that we weren't going to do and have it bite me in the bum later (as I have seen on other reports and videos.) One lady told her kids they were going to visit aunt and uncle so and so. when she told the kids they were really going to Disney World they started bawling b/c they wanted to go see the aunt and uncle!

I would have been devastated after months of planning if that happened.
So we told my kids we were going to St. Louis. This was not a lie as we flew out of st. louis. They kept asking what we were going to do and I told them i wasn't sure what we would have time to do. They asked about going up in the arch, going to six flags, etc. I kept telling them I wasn't making any promises about what we would do, but no matter what, we would have a great trip, have good food, a nice hotel with a pool, and that was all I would guarantee.
So they knew we were leaving on Saturday at some point but not what time. I asked them to go to bed early in case we decided to leave early. They had their mp3's, nintendo ds, etc packed in their backpack for the car ride to st. louis, which is a 3 hour drive for us. I went in their room Saturday morning, asked them both to wake up and handed them a clue for a scavenger hunt. they had to write the answer on the cards when they figured it out. Each card had a picture of something in St. louis to do. When they laid the cards out on the table it said:
Soup
Rise
Wii
Arrrrr
Gorin
2
On the back of the one that said 2 (it was the answer to a math problem) it said for them to open the box in the front room to find out where:
They opened the big box, I pushed play on our cd player so "When you wish upon a star" started playing, 2 huge red balloons came out of the box, and their dad and I shot confetti cannons at them. Inside the box was 2 tshirts that said:
There were new Disney
crocs, a mini mickey mouse plushie, their fannie packs with autograph books inside, etc.
They stood there kind of stunned and I said, "Do you understand??" Then they both read the shirts and started jumping up and down, screaming, asking when (right then) where (pop century) how long (9 days) etc. It was sooooooooo worth the months of planning and secrecy to see that thrill in their eyes. The entire drive to the airport was, "Oh, so that's why you wanted to see our autograph books" and stuff like that. Priceless.
