Superman 2, the Richard Donner cut, is out and available on DVD. I don't know how this slipped by me. I have been waiting for years for this to happen. Donner was the original director, but was fired and replaced by Lester. I am not saying one version is better than the next (I haven't seen this yet) but I hear Donner's version explains more. There is also more Brando and Lex Luthor. I am ordering it from Deep Discount. Just wanted to let anyone know who was asleep like I was.

I watched it for the first time last week. I have to say I was kind of disapointed.

While some parts are clearly better ( a scene where Lois tests her theory of Clark being Superman makes the whole experience worth it) much of it isn't up to the hype. The ending is especially difficult to take but makes sense if you watch the special features.

Personally I purchased the Ultimate Superman box set and this disc was part of the package. For people who don't buy the whole set I would recommend renting the Donenr cut rather than buying it on it's own.

I just watched it last night - got it for christmas - I liked the extra scenes with Jorel and the scene with Lois and Clark at Niagara Falls- cardaway, did you notice in that scene how clark had one hairdo and set of glasses when in the scene with Lois but a totally different (and geekier) hairdo and different glasses when it was just him in the picture? it had me rolling with laughter.

Also just watched SIII last night - absolutely horrendous - why did they try to make it a comedy? and Superman as a dirty, drunk, horny guy? yuk!

In the bonus features they explain the scene was actually a screen test they had to insert in the movie since Donner was never able to actually shoot the scene during filming. That was a great screen test!

To be honest I didn't really notice since I watched the bonus features first and knew the scene was coming. I was also too busy trying to remember the other scenes that were slightly different. I'll be watching the Lester version this week.

Just got the Ultimate Superman Collection DVD box set, and am looking forward to sitting down and watching the whole thing (well, okay, "looking forward" isn't the most accurate wording to describe my attitude toward Superman III and IV  ). I'm especially looking forward to seeing both the Donner cut of Superman II, and Superman Returns, as I haven't seen either before. (And, being a pretty big fan of Bryan Singer's work, I hope SR is better than what all my friends have been telling me.)

But before I start on Superman, I have to get through my other ultra-cool Christmas gift--the Ultimate Bond Collection DVD sets. And right now I'm on Live and Let Die.

I got those as well. The improvment of the picture and sound is amazing.

For those who have watched it, let me ask this: does Ursa kill the little boy like in the original, or is that cut out in this version as well? That scene really made her out to be the worst of the villians

I don't remember seeing the boy killed in the "new" version when I watched it last night.

Yes, I literally did a double take when I first popped in Dr. No. And it's completely awesome to be able to experience each and every Bond film in glorious DTS. :thumbsup2

Which brings up a question about the Superman DVDs: I thought (imagined, maybe?) that at least a couple of those films (Superman-The Movie, and Superman Returns) were supposed to feature a DTS option, but my initial perusal of the packaging indicates Dolby Digital 5.1.

Was I mistaken? :confused3

I never read anything about the Superman movies getting DTS. In fact WB rarely does DTS.

I have read a ton about them not including the real original audio for the first movie and the extras on the disc for the third movie. There is a number you can call to get the discs replaced.

I was actually more impressed with the picture improvement on the Bond films, but it is nice to have explosions actually sound like exposions rather than poofs coming from a hand held radio. And for those puristss out there, they included the original audio as well.
