Sunscreen Etiquette

When you are at a Water Park and are going to spray on your sunscreen, do you move away from the chairs/loungers to a more "private" area or do you just stand by your chair/lounger expecting that any Guest coming to a Water Park should know they could have sunscreen blow on them and their property while there?

I never purchase or use spray sunscreen. I don't think it applies as well. And yes, it annoys me when people spray it right where it drifts onto others. I didn't want your sunscreen mist in my face!

I bring spray sunscreen to theme parks and always move to a secluded area to spray it on. I know no one else wants my sunscreen on them so I try my best to be considerate.

If it's spraying other people that means it's not getting on you.

I refuse to use it for that reason. You just don't know where you have good coverage and where you don't.

I always move to a secluded/private area if I’m going to spray myself. And usually, I just spray some into my hand, then rub it in. It helps to contain it.

It drives me nuts when people just whip out their aerosol cans and haphazardly start to spray wherever they happen to be.

Speaking of spray sunscreen my husband and I were in a Gondola on the Skyliner headed to Studios from The Epcot hub, we were seated with two others, a woman and a teenage girl. After sitting and exchanging pleasantries, the mom proceeded to break out her spray can of sunscreen and started spraying herself and then her daughter. INSIDE THE GONDOLA. We reacted and said please can you not do that we are in a closed space with a breeze and do not want your sunscreen all over us. She told my husband to go “f himself”. We were polite but firm at first. After that i told her she was rude and disrespectful and lacked any manners what so ever. Once we arrived at the first exchange we went to exit and she took the can and sprayed us both. It was in our hair eyeglasses clothing etc. We told the cast member, and they stopped the sky liner and asked them to step off. We ended up going back to Epcot and then back to our hotel to clean up a bit. Disney bought us dinner via a gift card, and apologized about not having more clear expectations on the skyliner. We had no expectations Disney do anything for us other than deal with them. But we appreciated it.

This is an all the time thing with spray sunscreens at Disney. It seems as though guests will spray it no matter where they are or who is nearby. Not just at the pool.

This is outrageous and shocking to me— I can’t believe we have become a society where anybody (especially at a Disney resort where there are cameras everywhere!) thinks it’s acceptable to curse out a stranger for asking them not to use aerosolized product (of any kind!) in a small enclosed space, or even attempt it in the first place. If you need to apply sunscreen in a skyliner, it should not be spray on and you should also ask to wait for your own ride…

This might be the worst guest behavior story I’ve ever heard.

(Maybe this hits harder as someone with a child with asthma, but I’m irate thinking about what happened to your family—hope those people are asked not to return.)

There are sometimes the jerks/idiots who don’t step a couple feet to the side so their chemicals of choice don’t spray onto others. It happens. Even in non-water parks. But everyone else affected is generally polite enough to keep the discussion as to whether that person is a complete jerk or just an idiot to within their own party.

That is Beyond next level. Inside the Skyliner? Insensitive. Cussing out? Not illegal. Following and directly spraying you? You could have requested a sheriff. Would charges ultimately have been filed? Maybe not but that part was a direct attack with a chemical substance so there would have been lengthy discussions at a minimum. Very understanding of you to just tell the CMs. Also the perpetrators were double lucky in that you cared enough to not start swinging at them, seen enough videos/blog posts to know not all Disney guests are so considerate…

I assume someone is going to be using spray sunscreen and may possibly spray it on me. If they do not, I am pleasantly surprised. We do not use spray. I am not at water parks very often.

Would charges ultimately have been filed? Maybe not but that part was a direct attack with a chemical substance so there would have been lengthy discussions at a minimum. Very understanding of you to just tell the CMs. Also the perpetrators were double lucky in that you cared enough to not start swinging at them, seen enough videos/blog posts to know not all Disney guests are so considerate…

I can assure you the amount of restraint we both had to use was Oscar worthy. My husband had ‘the face of imminent danger is coming’ appearing, I practically pushed him out of the gondola when we arrived at the switch station with a salad of expletives coming from me. This was about two years ago, every time we board the skyliner we reminisce!

I don't use the spray kind, but if I did I would definitely make sure I wasn't spraying anyone else with it. That's just common courtesy. I prefer a lotion anyway as I find it easier and I don't have to worry about getting it on anybody else either.

DD (adult) is very allergic to most sunscreen and will break out in hives -- not something she needs at WDW (or anywhere else.)

I think there is a type of persons who lack all sense of spatial awareness and considerate behaviors. If it wasn't the spray sunscreen it'd be something else. You can clearly tell the people who do have spatial awareness and are considerate of others with spray sunscreen and I like to assume they are typically like that with other aspects as well.

My in-laws would like to get spray sunscreen when we'd go to the Lake, at the very least I could try and be on the other side of the boat when they were spraying it but the wind changes directions when it wants to. Still though better that I was at least able to be aware of what they were about to do, an unsuspecting person at a water park wouldn't have that.

I never liked the sprays. Now that I am solo.....I like to use it on my back/can't rub it but something is better than nothing . Always rub it in if using it on rest of my body and always away from people. I usually have both spray and lotion.

I would think the spraying would qualify as an assault.

They should have been trespassed from WDW at a minimum.

I'm highly allergic and I have had to go back to my room to shower and change more than once. People are just rude sometimes.

DD (adult) is very allergic to most sunscreen and will break out in hives -- not something she needs at WDW (or anywhere else.)

My DD has the same reaction to bug spray. Any skin exposed to bug spray breaks out in hives within 5 minutes.
