They've replaced vegetable oil in most products with sunflower seed oil because of biodiesel fuels. In other words $$$. It would seem I am allergic to sunflower seed oil (headaches, nausea). I'm wondering, how much is this allergy going to affect my health. IE: If I don't know it's in a product, can I get really sick by eating it? Am I the only one, or is this change affecting alot of people?

I don't know how common an allergy to sunflower seed oil is.

It's definitely the case that food allergies can be dangerous even if the amount of food is very small. The most severe type of food allergy is generally to peanuts, and there even a minute amount of peanut products can kill a person. But peanuts aren't closely related to sunflowers at all, so I don't know if sunflower products ever cause such severe allergies.

Also, the really dangerous food allergies are generally those that cause asthma-type symptoms -- the respiratory track swells up and the person can't breathe. Luckily, you don't seem to have those sorts of symptoms. For people who do have breathing problems if they accidentaly eat an allergy-producing food, there are these "epi-pens" that a doctor can prescribe. An Epi-pen is an injector containing epinephrine (that is, adrenalin) that the person or a friend can inject to treat the airway swelling.

If you haven't seen an allergy specialist yet, that is definitely something I'd suggest. They can help you determine how severe the allergy is, and they may be able to give you treatments that desensitize you to the allergy-producing substance.

Also, I find that brands of "natural" foods are more likely than the major commercial brands to actually list the specific type of oil on their label, rather than just saying "vegetable oil." Health food brands are also more likely to use oils with specific health benefits, such as canola, rather than just whatever was cheapest at the time.

OOh... I've never heard of anyone with a Sunflower seed oil allergy but I second the go see the allergist comment! I've got an allergy to Orange Oil and what might start out as a Headache syptom can easily change to a major allergic reaction. Be careful and good luck! :goodvibes

I have developed an allergy to sunflower seeds too! And now also shrimp! I get hives and itch and my eyes swell when I eat products with either in them, so I have been trying to be really careful because I don't want to have anything worse happen.

I have to check labels all the time because you never know where it will show up listed in the ingredients. It's such a weird thing to have happen as I'm 50+ and you would think it would have shown up way before this - though my friend's sister is over 60, and she got really ill (ambulance + hospital visit) after eating peanuts, and she had never had a problem with a peanut allergy before that day in her whole life. :confused3

I could have cried when Lays decided to switch to sunflower oil - no more Wavy Lays potato chips for me  and I REALLY miss 'em....:goodvibes

Love those Lay's Wavy Chips - but believe I've now recognized adverse gastrointestinal response to "Sunflower, corn, or canola oil" ingredients - stomach discomfort lasting 12-24 hours; A result of sunflower oil?
Lifelong acute allergy to peanuts, milder allergies to peas, soybeans/soya/soybean oil, tree nuts -- now sunflower, too? Yikes.
