Ouch! I took my kids to the beach for several days and I made sure to coat them from head to toe with SPF50 sunscreen but neglected to be as diligent with triple coating sunscreen on ME. My back and shoulders are burnt pretty bad and I am itchy. :(

I have Solarcaine but that only helps for a minute.

Anything else I can try??

I know this sounds gross and it stinks to high heaven, but if you sponge some white vinegar on it this will help relieve the burning.

Wal-Mart carries a brand of Aloe Vera with Lidocaine(sp?) that works wonders.

They usually stock it in the same area as the suntan lotions.

Otherwise, take white vinegar on towels and lay across the burn. It will help "pull" the burn out.

Aloe gel and Advil.

Buy a tub or tube of the aloe and keep it in the fridge. Apply often. Pop a couple of Advil every 4-6 hours until the pain stops. It also helps control inflamation.

Sorry to hear about your burn!

...I second the aloe with lidocaine and the Advil, and drink LOTS of water to hydrate you from the inside out. The vinegar works too.

I know this sounds counter intuitive, but when I had vicious sunburns I always felt better when I wore long pants and long sleeve shirts. I don't know why but it really didn't hurt as much. Believe me, I have had SO many burns in my life!

Just a interesting note. When you are putting sunscreen on your kids, make sure the sunscreen has either Avobenzone, Titanium Ozide or Zinc Oxide in it. The other ingredients protect again sunburns, but not skin cancer, moles, etc...

Hope you feel better soon...

I just did this last week with poor DD ...Aloe Vera make sure it is with Lidocaine :thumbsup2

Thanks - looks like I will be sending DH out to Wal-Mart for the Aloe!

I was so worried about my little redhead getting burned but she didn't get one spot of sunburn on her.

Tomatoes. If you apply tomatoes soon after the high amount of vitamin C helps heal the damage.

Make sure it is pure aloe, at least 99% and has no alcohol in it.

My doctor told me the lidocane will help with the pain but slow the healing, so if you need it for the pain use it but otherwise skip it.

I do the same thing, protect the kids and forget about myself, but aloe is a wonder.

Aveno bath is wonderful. And cortisone cream is what the Dr gave me one year that I got badly burned and blistered. Don't forget to drink lots, you are probably very dehydrated.

Hope you feel better soon!

Benadryl for the itching...a sunburn is partly a histamine reaction. You would not believe how much an antihistamine helps.

I've tried everything, but my old faithful is Noxema. It is really refreshing on a sunburn. :thumbsup2

You know, my DFather swears by this. I tried it one time, and I swear to you, it felt like someone had just poured molten lava on top of my sunburn.

I have no idea what I did wrong, but holy moly that was an experience I will never forget.

1) Got this one from a lifeguard:dump a box of tea bags in bath, hot water...let "brew" for 1/2 hour...remove tea bags & soak your skin - think it's the tannin in the tea.

2) from ER nurse OTC pepcid ac...seems to work.

3) Take 4 - 200 mg. motrin (rx strength), will help you sleep.

Hope you feel better soon.

This works well. :thumbsup2

I got a horrible burn early last week. I took Tylenol Extra Strength Rapid Release and there was no pain within 15 minutes, placed aloe gel in the fridge and put it on every hour. About five days later I found a small bottle of Aloe Vera Lotion by Fruit of the Earth. I had just started peeling, which I hate, and figured that at 99cents, it wouldn't hurt. It's the best stuff I have ever bought. It's very cooling and relaxing, and has helped minimize the peeling a lot. Stays on very well, lasting at least three hours with clothes rubbing against it, which regular aloe gel doesn't do for me.

A couple of years ago we were in Florida and my youngest son got a bad sunburn. I had Solarcaine with us which didn't help him. I went to CVS and bought an aloe vera gel--didn't help. I also bought something called burn relief which actually made the pain worse.

In total desperation, I dug into our toiletries case and found an old tube of Balmex back from when my kids were babies. It worked like a charm--took the pain away instantly and he slept through the night with no pain. The active ingredient is zinc oxide so I'd think that any ointment you can find with zinc oxide will do the trick for you.

Hope you feel better soon.

White vinegar (to relieve the burn) and baby oil (to moisturize the skin and prevent peeling). Sunburn is no fun at all. Hope it goes away real soon, regardless of the remedy that you choose.
