Sun, Shopping, Sand, Surf, Sweat & Shamu: A Splashin Summertime Sabbatical at SVR!

Holy cow that purple palace is something special :scared:

Did anyone think the bedspreads in the second photo look like the WDW All Star ones? Could they be cast offs from WDW?

I am also trying resolve some potential issues with our Seaworld & Aquatica 14-day parking pass purchased through Discovery Cove. I called DC yesterday to order one for the boss (since he is doing DC, SW & AQ on his trip) and the phone rep told me he could not purchase it yet as it needs to be bought within 28 days of your DC visit date :confused3. I questioned her on that, and explained that I had purchased my parking pass in January, and my DC date is actually two days later than his. I told her I had a PDF e-voucher emailed to me which I have long since printed and added to my travel binder. I also read her the terms listed on pass, which says its valid for 14 days after activation. She tells me that she doesn't think it will work when we arrive.

When I tried to call a few months ago, when I saw the postings for parking, I was told the 1 month thing also. They wouldn't let me purchase it. I didn't know about the issue if I purchased it.

That is very interesting about the mini golf. What about just doing one week of Congo River, right in the middle of your stay? What are the chances you'd go to play the first two or three days and the last two or three days of the trip? I guess I'm just looking for a reason to choose Congo River - I am going to go play at our local one this weekend I think, just because I've been reminded in this thread how much I love it! I think the mini golf will be closed for our stay in October. :(

That's kind of unusual about the parking pass. Hopefully that is cleared up soon, but you still have time before you go to get it sorted; glad this wasn't brought up on the day you were trying to park. Then you'd be wasting vacation time! :hourglass

Interesting theory :scratchin . I really hope that Disney (and all the big resorts, for that matter) re-purpose their old linens and furnishings when its time to remodel and redecorate. I know Sheraton did when they refurbed the Vistana a few years back. It was mentioned that a liquidator redirected the old items to charities, hurricane victims, etc. at the 3:05 mark in this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCRFxZUZdNk

(for the record, the old Vistana units were UGLY :crazy2: .... so "Miami Vice"!)

Those bed spreads certainly have the right coloring to have originated from the Disney all-star rooms ::yes:: .

Man. Hope you get that parking thing straightened out. :(

I have no doubt DC will eventually straighten it out....I just hate when any company gives out misinformation. I am thankful that we discovered the potential issue now rather then when we get there. At least I have lots of time for them to re-issue the pass (its already long since paid for, so its not another out of pocket expense at this point) and make sure we are set to go. If I don't get an email reply by early next week, I'll be within 28 days of our DC visit by then so I'll just call to have them re-issue.

Very good comments and ideas about the Congo pass :thumbsup2 . That very well may be what we opt for. I always hesitate to spend too much on mini golf in advance in case its just too hot or rainy to get our money's worth.

Jake just mentioned last night that he and Sweetie want to go jet skiing while we're in Florida (funny coming from the guy with an alligator and shark fear  .... he claims he'll be going too fast on the jet ski for either one to catch him :lmao:). I know they have them at Lake Bryan (Buena Vista Watersports) which is really close to the Vistana. But holy moly....$105 for an hour? :scared: I will have to check out and see what other options there may be. I wonder if there is someone who offers them at Daytona Beach?

Can it ever be too hot for putt putt? I have always had a soft spot for it. :goodvibes We always traveled in June/July when I was little and remember playing but not caring about the heat. Of course, we only went after dark, so I know that helped.

I am 100% certain that there will be someone offering those rides at Daytona Beach. I just did a search and found DaytonaJetSki for $50 half hour / $80 per hour. These things aren't cheap, but I wonder if you could do just a bit better than that. For the same rates, we have jetskidaytona as well, plus dozens more! You could at least save a little over the $105 you found!

We mini golfed one morning last August and thought we would DIE before we reached the final hole. It was soooo sunny, sooooo hot and sooooo humid that the boys were just about ready to drop :faint: . I think the secret is to make it the evening activity.....at least then you don't need to deal with the sun! :cool2:

Thanks for the info on the jet ski rentals! I did a little Google search as well, and it appears there's one at Ponce Inlet (which I think is just a short drive from Daytona) that says you will see dolphins while you jet ski. Now that sounds like something that appeals even to me! Not sure if the vacation budget will comfortably absorb the cost, but we shall see ;) .

What did your boss decide?

He and his daughter went home to finish talking about it, and ended up watching Blackfish. So now they are fighting about what hotel to stay at, AND they don't want to go to Discovery Cove/Seaworld/Aquatica.

And ... they are at exactly 30 days from their DC visit, so they can't even cancel without losing 100% of their payment

:furious: :furious: :furious:

I give up. I may need chocolate therapy tonight.

I've seen Blackfish and while it did bother me(a lot) I would still go to Seaworld. Tell your boss to do a little research on the ex-employees in the documentary. Many of them have come forward to say that a lot was out of context and not presented the way it was supposed to be. IMO, it's very much a 'take it with a grain of salt' situation.

In a way it reminds me of the Marineland drama that pops up every few years.

How easily swayed. Show them articles where Seaworld rehabs and frees turtles and other marine life. And if that bothers them, I guess all zoos, butterfly gardens, animal reserves, and pets are now not to be ok either.

No good deed goes unpunished. You were being so kind to help them, I am sorry they are being so difficult.

On a happy note, I just renewed my USO AP. They are so reasonable when you renew. We are so excited to see Diagon Alley. And josh at easywdw reviewed the new Italian place at Citywalk, and now we want to try that place out too. We like Nascar, so that may be a place we revisit. The hotdog place looks good as well. So many new things we want to try.

I actually printed him the 32 page rebuttal that SeaWorld issued after Blackfish was released, and he did take some time to read it. He pooh-poohed a lot of it away, with the comment "Why should I believe SeaWorld?". To which I replied "Are they any less reliable than the producers of a documentary made for profit?". ;)

Does he really want to lose that money?

Toward the end of the day, he said he'd still go based solely on the fact that he can't get a refund on the admission. But apparently he's going to wear some Free Willy t-shirt or something to "make a statement" :sad2: . Ah well, to each his own. I just hope we don't cross paths with them during our time at SeaWorld (wouldn't that just figure???).

He did finally decide on a property to upgrade to. Its still fairly basic and inexpensive, but a step up from what he currently has booked. I am going to make the change for him tomorrow. Then he's on his own ::yes:: ......it is way too exhausting (and he's being way too frustrating!) for me to worry about his trip too. :goodvibes

lol, that's what I told him. He just took his daughter to the new Ripleys Aquarium in Toronto this past spring. Apparently it was okay ;) .

As for being difficult....I have worked for him (and his dad....they are business partners) for more than 16 years. For the record, there are awesome people, and I *LOVE* my job. I have endured their "difficult" before and I will most certainly continue to.....its part of their charm :rotfl: . I will not hold the fact that he is being obtuse about SeaWorld against him (and hey, if they choose not to go....its their loss, figuratively and financially).

Yay for the AP renewal! I can't wait to hear all about your time at Diagon Alley. The pictures and the youtube videos are incredible. Are you doing a trip report following your vacation? You should....you have so many fun and special components planned for this trip! (I'm going to be living through you for the MNSSHP too!)

And ha ha! You sound like us! So many foods, so little time ;) . I have promised Jake and Steve we will try and hit up US & IOA on one of next year's trips....they are huge coaster lovers, and we would love to see the new HP area once the crowds die down a bit. After this vacation, we need to do some serious thinking about what our priorities are for 2015....it will be time to start formulating a plan! I also want to check out the new I-Drive 360 complex.....I hear the aquarium, Tussauds and Orlando Eye should all be open by spring.

Geez.. that purple castle was pretty special.:crazy2:

So Gina… I know you said you are going to cook more this year and you mentioned a few places you are eating, but I was wondering if you plan all of the places you will go to eat or if you are winging it some days?
I've been reading old threads and reviews on places around Orlando and I already have more places that I want to try than I have dinners to eat on Vacation;).
The only repeat for us is going to be NBA city. I like to have a general idea so that we aren't driving around looking for something while hungry and tired. I can't wait to see where you guys end up to get some more ideas.:)

(1) like SW has never seen that before
(2) who has a Free Willy t-shirt in 2014?
(3) nice protest ... They have your money LOL

I agree - you've helped them with ressies... It's up to them now to have a good time.

We have a loose plan for our dining, not for "schedule" purposes, but more to make sure we fit in our must-do's on the days they are best suited (like bringing in our favourite pizza on a night after being in the heat and sun at a waterpark all day.....those days are much more fitting for a "bring in" dinner than a sit-down-and-dine larger meal.....by then, we just want to put our feet up and relax!).

Here's what we kind of have planned as far as meals go:
  • Saturday, August 16th: dinner at Dinosaur Barbecue, our Syracuse favourite
  • Sunday, August 17th: breakfast at Tim Hortons before our flight, lunch at Friendly's in Orlando (its an arrival day tradition!), dinner at Cici's (a Jake favourite, and its conveniently right across the highway from the resort)
  • Monday, August 18th: breakfast in the villa, lunch while we're out shopping (maybe Checkers?) and dinner at Millers Ale House (a new restaurant for us!)
  • Tuesday, August 19th: breakfast at the villa, lunch at Typhoon Lagoon (maybe a picnic? still undecided), Giordano's pizza for dinner (take-out, eaten in the villa)
  • Wednesday, August 20th: breakfast in the villa, lunch at the villa (maybe homemade subs), dinner at Olive Garden (Steve's #1 pick)
  • Thursday, August 21st: breakfast at the villa, all-day dining at Aquatica
  • Friday, August 22nd: breakfast at the villa, lunch at the villa (grilled cheeses? or something easy), barbecue for dinner (burgers, hot dogs, salad)
  • Saturday, August 23rd: breakfast at the villa, lunch at Steak & Shake in Daytona, late dinner at TGI Fridays (my favourite!!)
  • Sunday, August 24th: breakfast and lunch at the villa, dinner at Nascar (meal and mini golf package)
  • Monday, August 25th: breakfast and lunch at Discovery Cove, frozen pizza for dinner (if anyone even wants it!!)
  • Tuesday, August 26th: breakfast at the villa, all day dining at Aquatica
  • Wednesday, August 27th: SeaWorld all day dining (breakfast, lunch and dinner)
  • Thursday, August 28th: breakfast and lunch at the villa, Buffalo Wild Wing for dinner (take-out.....this is a great meal to bring in)
  • Friday, August 29th: breakfast at the villa, lunch at Sonic Drive-In (another Jake fave), and Golden Corral for dinner after a long day at the malls (or we might try the Wood Grill Buffet this trip....its fairly new, sounds very similar and we've never been there yet)
  • Saturday, August 30th: the plans are for SeaWorld...maybe all day dining again?
  • Sunday, August 31st: Homeward Bound….breakfast at Dunkin Donuts (a departure day tradition), lunch at ?? (depends on what we do and where we end up for that final day), dinner at Nathan's at the airport (another departure day tradition) before our evening flight
The boys are quite miffed that Chili's is not part of the plans. Its another one we love. I just can't figure out where it would fit, though. It looks like it may need to wait for the next vacation!

Amen, sister! :thumbsup2

Gina: Wood Grill Buffet is awesome. A little more money than GC but also a bit more upscale. The best ice-cream that I have had at a buffet rest. They do stir fry to order, you select what you want and the amount and they do the rest, they even bring it to your table.
