It is such a chore to get sunscreen on my DD2 and DS1. I feel like I spend more time getting sunscreen on them than we actually spend outside and then trying to reel them in while we are out playing to reapply is next to impossible. Plus it is so greasy. Ugh. I was thinking of trying some sun protection t-shirts and pants or maybe adding RIT Sun Guard to their clothing to help cut down on the amount of sunscreen we have to use. Does anyone have any experience with sun protection clothing and/or Sun Guard?

My sister bought a one-piece for my niece when she was younger. Now it fits her sister. They only used it for swimming or at the spray park.

I bought a bunch of the shirts at Liquidation World to use this summer for the daycare children.

What kind of sunscreen have you been using?

I like the Banana Boat Kids one-it's thicker and rubs in well.

I buy sun protective swimwear for my kids every year. I get the longsleeved shirts for the older kids and a coverall for the baby. I LOVE them!!! I wish I could afford to buy more clothes for the whole family. I did buy myself a black longsleeved swimshirt and wore it in July to a south Georgia beach. I thought I'd have problems overheating, but was pleasantly surprised with not feeling overly hot in a long-sleeved shirt. You do have to remember, though, that I was in and out of the water. The clothing works wonderfully and I love not having to put chemicals on my kids to protect them from the sun.

I recently bought the RIT SunGuard and washed it into a few loads of our clothing, including some long-sleeved shirts I plan to use as cover-ups. It seems fine - as a layperson I really have no way of knowing if it's working, so I can only really go by the fact that it's recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation.

Forgot to mention I bought a T-shirt one for myself. I took my niece to WDW and I knew I couldn't reach my back with the sunscreen. At almost 5, I didn't trust my niece to do a good job of applying it.

I just put it on over my swimsuit.

Just another suggestion, probably won't be good for your 1 year old, but we use the coppertone kids spray sunscreen. You don't have to rub it in, and you can apply it really fast! Then I use a sunscreen "stick" for the face.

I was also going to suggest a spray. There are various brands out there. Be sure to look for one that does not need to be rubbed in and does not leave a smell or a sticky residue. I stand DD in the tub in the morning and give her a once over with the spray. I have a garnier clear spray. I do use a high factor rub in on faces though.

Living in Australia where it gets very hot in the summer and high risk of skin cancer, my son always wears long sleeve sun protection top. He just wears board shorts on the bottom when swimming and they are pretty long with the long sleeve rash top.

In Australia they are called a Rashie or Rash Vest which is what Rashie is short for. If you google rashie or rash vest.

The best ones are 50+ sun protection so if you are going to get one make sure that they have the hight sun protection. There are also chlorine resistant rash vests too, they use a material that is better suited to use in swimming pools and will not be degraded as quickly by the chlorine. If you are not going to use them much that may not matter, its a good thing to have here in Australia where many of us have pools and the kids spend a lot of time swimming in pools over the summer.
