This is an FYI for those of us with kids 5-15. Go to RIF.org and sign up for the summer reading program. The kids have to read so many hours Talya has to read 7 hours, Noah 10 hours and they can earn a $10.00 GC to Target.

Barnes and Noble is doing their summer reading program barnes , read 8 books and get a free book! And our local library gives free stuff each week for kids who read!

Thanks for the info!!!

The Target one is for a CHANCE to win a $10 gift card.

Barnes and Noble is up to 6th grade.

AMC movie theaters used to have a reading promo too. Will check and see if they still do.

Edit: No reading promo, but they are having free movies each week. Check the link below if you have amc in your area.

Thanks, Dyan, for starting this thread. Anyone else know of other promos?

Thanks for correcting me, I didn't read that well!
PRIZES: Each child who completes a valid entry will be entered into a random drawing to win one of the 10,000 Target GiftCards as listed on our Prize page. Target will send prizes directly to the winners.

I told my kids they get a card and I will be happy to buy them one if they do the reading! :) Anything that works here! :thumbsup2

Thanks!!! I'll definitely get signed up for both!!! Plus our library has a summer reading program that starts Father's Day weekend and goes through the first of August.. They change the requirements every year to keep the kids on their toes!!!

I love the free movies during the summer.. We have 2 theaters around here that show the movies.. I'll have to find out what is where.. Thanks so much for reminding me of that!

Also, our local library is offering a reading comprehension class for parents to help the kids during the summer.. We do our state testing in the fall here.. :( That is a rant all of it's own!! :furious:

Oh, the wonderful things people in state government come up with!

Don't you remember the days when summer was just about playing outside and trying to be best friends with any kid who had a pool?

The funny thing is, and who knows, maybe we were weird, but DSis and I used to read in the summer all the time. Mom would tell us to go outside and run around and we would hide our books up our shirts and read under the juniper trees where she couldn't see us.

Maybe it is the fact that the reading is required that makes it so unappealing.

My friends and I would read under the weeping willow tree that a neighbor had. Noone could see us, but we could see lots! Oh the stories I could tell! :teeth:

Hmm...sounds like a book we wouldn't let our children read. :)

Build a Bear has a summer reading program too.
Take your child in to the store and sign up and I think they have to read 6 books by the end of July and they get a $5 US/$7 CDN gift card.
My little ones are too little so I haven't looked into it anymore than that but it sounds like a great thing! I know my nieces are going to be thrilled!

Okay, my best friend, her sister and I would read in their walk in closet until her mom would kick us outside, then we'd walk down to the nearby cemetary because it was shady and no one would bother us! Our spot was in the back, near the groundskeepers shed.
