My son(5) was diagnosed with a shellfish allergy this fall. He already has a soy allergy. Plus, my youngest is allergic to milk, and possibly tomato. I was just worried about cross-contamination. My son had an anaphalactic reaction when he ate fried cheese cubes that were fried in the same oil as shrimp. I am just fearful of something happening at WDW. Does anyone have suggestions? BTDTs? Thank you for your help.

Hi and :welcome: to disABILITIES!

If you click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. The top item is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information. About halfway down Page 3 of the FAQ is information and contacts related to dietary concerns.

Some restaurants have dedicated fryers in which only french fries are cooked. All other fried food such as cheese, zuchinni, shrimp, and onion rings are cooked in the same oil. The only way to prevent cross contamination of deep fryed foods is eat at a restaurant that does not serve that food.

I cannot eat french fries cooked in a common fryer because of the soy and wheat in onion rings, breaded meats, and breaded veggies. As stated above read FAQs for information on contacting WDW. They can help find allergy free foods. A sit down restaurant's chef might make your child some deep fried cheese by hand instead of a deep fryer for example. Counter restaurants are less flexible and you have to make sure you let them know of any allergies. This site has lists of menus that you will need to read so you will know in advance if they also serve seafood for example. Cross contamination can also come from cookware, utensils, and counter tops for example. Soy seems to be in everything and I am soy sensitive.

In the DisABILITIES FAQ there is an email address for Brenda Bennett at WDW. I strongly suggest you contact her as she is a wealth of information. She can send you ingredient listings for many of the foods served in the parks and can help you get the information you need to keep everyone safe.

Also, when you make your ADRs, be sure to let CM know of any food allergies in your party. They'll pass this information along to the appropriate restaurant and chef prior to your visit. The chef will also come to your table and review the menu with you before ordering.

As the parent of a severely food allergic child (peanuts and tree nuts) I can honestly say that Disney definitely takes these issues seriously and will go the extra mile to accommodate your needs.

Have a great trip!

I am also very allergic to all fish. I was told that the fish is in a different kitchen then anything else at WDW.

Just got back from a week at WDW, our second trip in 2 years. DS has severe peanut, tree nut and fish allergies. I had contacted Brenda a few weeks in advance and before we left, I received calls from just about all the chefs at places where we had made ADRs, to further go over the allergies. They all went out of their way to ensure that DS could enjoy his meals. Just makes WDW that much more special. At California Grille, the chef even had a special nut-safe cake made for my parents' anniversary that DS could also have. It was delicious--they made it onsite for us and it only cost $25 which is far less than our grocery store's butter cream cakes! WDW is very careful about fish prep and serving. I too was quite nervous about buffets, food prep and cross contam. but the chefs explained that fish prep is separate from other food prep in their kitchens.
