Suggestions On Getting Room Upgrade?

Family and I are spending 4 nights at the Grand Californian in late July. We've booked a 'standard' room through expedia. Does anyone have any suggestions on how we might request a room upgrade or, lacking that, the best room available in that catagory?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I've only been upgraded once at the GCH, and that was at Christmastime when someone rented a whole block of rooms for a party and I was moved from standard to theme park view. I would request a courtyard view (which is a standard room), otherwise you could end up with a wonderful view of the valet parking people at work. If you don't specify, you'll probably get whatever. Also, they do have courtyard view rooms that are right next to the elevator. That might be convenient, but it was a really noisy room, we listened to the elevator motor all night long. A courtyard view room is usually pretty quiet, and you get the added plus of watching the monorail pass by periodically.

Hard to get an upgrade for a four night stay, I have found it easier with stays of 7 days or more, however you don't ask you don't get...

We were there in March, first time for DL. On advice I'd read here, I called up GCH, asked for guest services, and explained that we would be staying there for our first trip to DL, and that we were very much anticipating our stay at the GCH, which we'd heard so many good things about. Then I politely asked if it was possible for us to get a free room upgrade. She said that for us, a room upgrade meant a better view, and she would put it in the computer that we had requested it. There are no guarantees, but they block out the rooms a few days before, and they will take your request into account when they are doing room assignments. We did get the upgrade, and we loved our room overlooking the courtyard, which was just 3 rooms away from the main lobby elevators, so very convenient for the DTD entrance.

If you don't request it, they won't offer it, but calling ahead is supposed to be quite helpful. Good luck! :goodvibes

I had a courtyard view as a standard view last month. It was quite a walk from the lobby.

I would call GCH and see what they can do!! We are also going late July and staying at GCH..we are staying in a suite one nite then DCA view the others..hoping that concierge level opens up!! (we just joined DVC and are using our points..joined because we stay at GCH each visit and LOVE it) so I would call..we request bunk beds also for our DD.they can't gurantee it but do the best they can!!!

Take it from someone who has worked in a hotel: Be super friendly and nice and ask for one when you check in! I would always give a free upgrade (if available) to those guests who were kind and took an interest in my day and well being. Or if they were celebrating something special I would too.

Our entire front desk staff would go out of our way for the pleasant guests, because we couldn't please the cranky ones no matter what we did. ;)

We are going in two weeks and have never thought to ask for an upgrade...

I must be a big ninny!

We do stay Concierge though, so maybe those are good rooms anyway...

I love GCH, Love concierge, Love Disney, and will be very sweet and ask for a fabulous room because we are going for my daughter's wedding planning session. :dance3:

Surely there is a little pixie dust laying around for that!

We had a view of the front of the hotel. It really wasn't that bad. We could also see parts of DTD off to the right, and in the distance the DLH and PP. The nice part of having a room there, was we were right off the lobby. Very close to the elevator and everything else.

I've never gotten a free upgrade at the GCH. We did get a free upgrade to a pool view at the DLH one year though. Not something to expect, but nice when you get!

We got upgraded in honor of my son's birthday a couple weeks ago
