We are looking for a vacation destination for early August 2009. Disney is, of course in the running... but we are also closely looking at trips where we can drive there in a day. We are in Iowa and would like to stay within a 10-12 hour radius at the very most.

Cast includes Me, DH, (both early 40's), DS 18 and DS 17. Each of the boys will possibly be bringing a friend. One DS is a golfer - we would like outdoor activities - water parks, hiking, cycling, shopping, etc.

Ideally we would drive to the destination and not have to get in the car each and every day. (Not against a short day trip or two, but would like to be able to spend several days at the resort). We do NOT want to camp - or fish - or "rough it" in any way.

Ok, Disers..... have at it.... Where should we look at going???

Thanks in advance for your help!!!:)

Funny, that is the one we have started looking at just now. There are so many resorts it will take a while to sort through.... hopefully someone with more info will help us out! :)

Thanks for the suggestion!

For an urban trip, I would go to Chicago. A million things to do, great restaurants, a train/bus system that will get you around, and really good variety of things to do.

Someone mentioned the Dells, we haven't been but friends say it is great.

My work did a company event to the Abbey Resort in Lake Geneva. It was a great resort with a ton of activities.

I would say the Wisconsin Dells, Lutsen area north of Duluth in MN or the Brainerd Lakes area in MN. They would all have what you are looking for, especially the Brainerd area for golf! I have been to all three several times. The Wisconsin Dells has more to do outside of the resort, the Brainerd area has the best golf and Lutsen has the best hiking/mountain biking type activities--although one of my favorite golf courses is there as well.

We have been to the Wilderness Resort in Wisconsin Dells many times but always during the fall. www.wildernessresort.com They have a wide range of accommodations, golf, and several on-site waterparks but if the boys are older teens they would probably prefer to head over to Noah's Ark. There is an outlet mall there as well as a plenty of natural beauty if you venture outside town. You will need your car for that. Downtown WD is a fun, kitschy touristy place. All you need to know is "fudge and moccasins".

Thank you to everyone who replied! I have written down all of your suggestions as far as resorts and areas.... It really helps to have a starting point!!

Thanks again! :thumbsup2
