My DD is 9, turning 10. After a summer in the sun and water, her skin is very dry. She is "starting" to care about skincare. I use to have to force her to put any kind of moisturizer on. She use to complain it felt "yucky" on her face.

I usually put J&J baby lotion, Luberderm (sp?), or Eucerin on the kids' face and body when needed.

But she is watching me do my face cleansing and moisturizer routine and asked to put my stuff on her face. I let her put my night cream on. I usually use Mary Kay and now an AGEL line that has the anti-aging "stuff" so I don't want to let her put that on her skin.

She's interested in "grown-up" skincare. The Luberderm/Eucerin is like putting body lotion on her face and not what Mommy does.

Is there any recommendations on a basic skincare line for kids that you can get at a regular drugstore?

Nothing too fancy or super expensive due to a high markup just because it is targeted for kids, kwim? Just a basic fragrance free, hypoallergenic moisturizer.

I was thinking maybe Neutrogena? Because that is what I use to use when I was MUCH younger. Any problems (with the ingredients) with young kids using it?

How about if the moisturizer contains SPF? I prefer one with SPF because sun freckles run in my family. They show up on our faces with the sun and they never seem to fade away completely. Mom and I both have them and we use SPF on our faces daily as a consequence. Any negatives on having DD9 use a moisturizer with SPF on her face at her age?

Any other options?

Also, what about cleansers? Honestly, I don't usually use much face cleansers myself unless I get blemishes. I wash my face in the shower at night - sometimes with an exfoliate or cleanser or just plain water and with a face cloth and water in the morning. The kids too - just a wash cloth, no soap. Occasional "soap" only in the shower/bath. They do bathe daily. So, I'm thinking just get face moisturizer for her right now.

Gosh, our kids grow up so fast!!! My little girl is becoming a young lady right before my eyes. Pre-summer, I was holding her down to out moisturizer or sunscreen on her face. Now, out of the blue she is asking to put my stuff on her face and if she can have her own face moisturizer....

my step daughter is nine also. We have started her with a couple of different things. I got her a travel pack of Ponds face cleanser cloths for our recent trip to Disney. They are very mild and clean the face quickly and easily. She thought they were fun!

I also got her a bottle of Cetaphil face wash and Cetaphil moisturizer. This stuff is a gentle as you can get. It works well and it won't irritate her young skin! It WILL cleanse her skin well and keep her very moisturized and get her into the habit of cleaning her face!

My step daughter loves using it. She feels very much like a TWEEN!

Thanks for the suggestion!! That's exactly what I was looking for. I used Cetaphil on the girls when they were babies.

I will look to pick it up when I next hit CVS. I guess the SPF in the face moisturizer can wait at least until next summer.

my 8yo dd uses cetaphil as well. i dont think there much else out there for the younger kids.

I have had DS10 using Dove Facial products since he was 8. Mainly in the winter he would get dry areas.

I second the Cetiphil (spelling??). There are lots of issues here and I'm sure you're aware of all of them (growing up too fast, putting too much focus on looks, etc.). But what you asked is for helpful suggestions that aren't too expensive. :hippie:

The Cetiphil is what dermatologist recommend for so many people, regardless of their age. It's softening and smells nice and won't DAMAGE her young skin. That's what I would be worried about at her age--putting things on her face.

I saw an elite skin specialist for years (for skin cancer) when I was barely twenty. She was an MD plastic surgeon and held a second MD in skin studies alone. She said Cetiphil. So I still use that and have had wonderful skin. That and SPF! :goodvibes

You can always buy her a pretty acrylic bottle with her monogram and have the Cetiphil in that on her counter to make it special.

That is a great suggestion. DD is almost 8 but gets clogged pores on her forehead, I have been having her wash her face everynight but I was hoping for something that might help control the oil.

I have mild eczema so I have to be very careful what I use on my skin. I have used Cetaphil for a number of years and LOVE it. It is very gentle. Aveeno products also tend to be gentle on young or sensitive skin... and that you can get just about everywhere as well.

as a former clinique girl that is all I use; and my DD since she was 10 loves it! It is a hypoallergenic and dermatologist tested line. It is all we use.

Cetaphil is a great recommendation! I use their body lotion and know that their products are very good. I would also like to suggest Dove products. My dd is 9 and for the past year, she has been using what I use:

Dove Beauty Moisture foaming facial cleanser and we follow up with
Dove Deep Moisture facial lotion which has SPF 15.

I use Oil of Olay face lotion, with SPF 15. It's gentle, I think it would be great for a kid. I also have pale and sometimes prone to freckles skin, and I like this lotion on my face! :goodvibes

DD9 started to have an oily skin around her nose this summer, so I bought her some Ponds facial cleansing cloths and cetaphil lotion. So far it's working for her combination skin. When she gets into make up (hopefuly years from now) I will look into hypoallergenic brands.

She also wanted to start using deodorant this summer. I think advertising works since she HAD to had a certain brand, since it's for girls... I don't remember brand, but it said OMG on the label!

My suggestions have already been mentioned, but I'll throw in a second (or third) vote for them. My skin is very prone to break out and this is what works best for me -- even better than expensive brands. It seems I've tried most of them.

Cetaphil face wash
Olay Complete moisturizer, SPF 15

I like the Olay Complete because it's smooth and non-greasy and it rubs in quickly. The SPF seems to work well, too.

I have very sensitive skin and I use the nutregena alcohol free toner and oil of olay sensitive skin moisture lotion. I use the neutrgena clensing cloths to remove makeup before showering. I can never use a clenser on a rag ect in the bath b/c it irratates my skin (think red and blotchy).

You should visit the product ratings at the Environmental Working Groups website. They have a section called Skin Deep and they test and rate just about every beauty product on the market. Some of the ingredients in adult skin products are pretty dangerous- even when they don't carry warnings. Kids absorb so much through their skin!
You should be able to find a safe and effective product line on there for her. I love the Kiss My Face line- and it's always rated pretty high. Alba also makes some excellent products.
Just go to http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com If you don't want to sign up for the updates- just click no thank you and they'll take you right to the list.
It's also invaluable as a sunscreen source. Most of the sunscreens readily available today are not even effective and are full of hazardous chemicals.

I just wanted to add that Mary Kay has a line for younger girls. It's Velocity and doens't have the anti-aging ingredients. I use Mary Kay and soon my 8 (almost) 9 year old will be using the Velocity. It has a nice scent and I've heard from others that it's great and keeping acne away.

I was a Clinique consultant for 9 years and I cannot say more better things about the products, both for young and old. Their mild soap is hard-milled and will last forever. The Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion is wonderful. They will be gentle enough yet address all the needs that teens will need in a proper skin care routine. All the products are allergy tested, fragrance free and dermotolgist formulated. There is intensive training that the consultants go thru several times a year so you can feel confident that your sales person knows what they are talking about.

Okay so I don't feel crazy. Dd9 is complaining of 'bumps' on her face so I'm having her wash with Aveeno for a rash, but it sounds like I need to change that plan. I was so worried she was getting my overly sensitive skin. Hello my face just reacted because I changed my shampoo...two big dry spots and rashes on my eyelids. I've caused dermatologists to retire, my skin is so crazy.
