Suggestions for places to go outside of the parks

Just been on the phone & booked our 3rd Florida holiday, this time a fly-drive through Travel City, 28 Aug to 11 Sep £1500 for 4 people, which I thought was quite good.

Done all the Disney & Universal stuff so thought we would see some of the real Florida this year.

We are flying into Sanford & intend eventually getting to Key West, can anybody suggest an itinery, including 'must see' places & things to do on the way & return.

We want to have the last day at Busch gardens & visit Miami sometime along the route.

Also, we hav'nt booked any hotels yet, would you suggest pre-booking or just finding what we can when we get there ?
And any other helpful tips would be appreciated.

Hello! Since you are starting out in Sanford, I would recommend heading east to the Kennedy Space Center, then on your way south thru Cocoa Beach stop by Ron Jon surf shop, then check out the surfers on the Atlantic ocean. You will be able to pass thru Miami on your way to Key West. In the Keys, you may enjoy stopping in Islamorada on your way down to Key West at the World Wide Sportsman store - it is huge and a nice break on the long drive. There are nice local restaurants near the marina where you can have lunch. In Key West there is plenty to do, such as a tour of Ernest Hemingway's home, visit the southernmost point in the US, and don't miss the sunset festival at Mallory Square! If you head back to Tampa via the west coast, the beaches in Sarasota on Siesta Key are beautiful - like white baby powder. You will love Busch Gardens. The weather that time of year is typically hot - luckily they have water rides to help cool you off!
