We are planning a last minute trip for June 6th. Originally we were just going to drive (from Austin TX) but I decided 22 hours in the car was no vacation at all!!
Now we are thinking of flying Jet Blue to Long Beach. Problem is, we were planning a day trip to LL. Should I rent a car for the whole week or just for the day and then find another way back to the airport when we leave?

Where are you staying? Will you need a car each day? If not, I'd say get a cab or car service from the airport and just get a car for your trip to LL. No use spending money on a car that is collecting dust in the parking lot, is kind of how I feel. Of course, if you're staying off site or want to see other things in the area, a car would be nice.

We are staying at HOJO so we wouldn't really need it otherwise. Just thought that once you pay for a shuttle/taxi it might be similar in price.

A taxi from LGB to HoJo will cost you about $60. If you have a car that many days, you're probably looking at $200? Just a guess. It's really just a convenience / preference thing.

We are going in November / December for 10 days. I'm getting a car at LGB and then turning it in the next day...we are mainly just going to use it to make a grocery store run.

I would check into both Priceline and Travelocity special deals for car rentals. We're going at the end of June for 12 days, and I was able to get a car rental for the entire time through Travelocity special deals--Budget Rental car, Long Beach Airport, $375 for the whole time. You might want to see if you can get a deal--you never know!

I know there are some car rental places right near DLR--you could try to get a one day car rental for a really small fee.

I should have clarified...we are flying into LGB and then heading straight to LL for a day, then coming back to DL.

I'm thinking renting for the day is the way to go...but then would I be able to turn the car in somewhere around HOJO or would I need to go back to the airport and then shuttle to HOJO?

If I have to go back to the airport, shuttle to HOJO and then shuttle back to HOJO a few days later it might be better to just keep the car for the week.

There is an Alamo in LGB and Downtown Disney. You can pick up from LGB, head to LL, then come back to Anaheim and drop it off at DD. It's more expensive to do a one-way trip, but much less than paying for a car for the week. :)
