Please help me out DISers. I am looking for suggestions for my ladies church book club. I belong to the 'cool moms' group and the 'little old ladies' group. Those are my nicknames. Anyway the cool moms group just read The Widow's War by Sally Gunning. Good read. Moving story about a widow in the late 1700s. After her husbands death her home goes to her son in law. The story is about her fight to stay in her home. A flashback goes back to before her marriage and she's having SEX! Whoa didn't see that coming. Then later after her husband is gone she hooks up with a widow and they're having SEX!

OK sex is well and good but it's not what I need to share with my church ladies book club. So DISers please help me out. I'm looking for inspiring uplifting books with NO SEX, NONE AT ALL.

Help me out. Bring it on DISers! Thanks for your help.

How about you contact a Christian Bookstore? Perhaps they have titles for you?

Sorry I cannot think of any books off the top of my head however I am sure they are out there.:thumbsup2

Jan Karon is an author you're looking for. She wrote the "Mitford" series about a small town Episcopalian priest. Very interesting stories. I'd start with the first in the series. (Just google or Amazon to find out more.) Very gentle reads.

I second the Jan Karon suggestion! The Mitford Series is perfect for you. These books have everything (except sex!) You will laugh and cry. Beautiful stories and perfect for book clubs, especially for your church groups.

Even if you don't choose them for the club, be sure to read them for yourself!

There is a whole sub-genre of mysteries called a "cozy mystery." They generally have less violence & gore, and no sex.

They are like the Murder She Wrote, TV series with Jessica Fletcher, (Angela Landsbury,) or the Diagnosis Murder, TV series.

Agathe Christie books fall under this category, too.

There are also many "theme" books as cozy mysteries. Death by Chocolate, knitting/craft theme cosies, etc.

I just finished a trilogy, The Betrayed, The Begotten and The Blessed by Lisa Bergren. Kinda "quest-y". The Yada Yada Prayer Group Books by Neta Jackson. Sisterchick books are always a fun read, by Robin Jones Gunn.

I appreciate the suggestions so far. I'm not necessarily looking for something by a Christian author just something without well you know. (Thanks mods for not deleting this thread).

Keep it coming DISers.

Fannie Flagg has some wonderful books that you might be interested in:

Welcome to the World, Babygirl
Standing in the Rainbow
Can't Wait to Get to Heaven
Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man - One of the funniest books I have ever read!

Have the members of your book group specifically asked for recommendations that don't have any sexual content? Just because they are a "church group" doesn't mean they might not be able to handle a racy scene or two.

There's always Christy by Catherine Marshall. A member of my (decidedly non-church and lots of sex-having!) book group tried to get us to read it for years until we finally said no and told her not to recommend it any more.

Of course even in Christy there were a couple of iffy scenes...

Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
The Help

Try some classics. I adore Jane Austen. No sex there. Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte is excellent.

I have been reading the Elm Creek Quilts Series by Jennifer Chiaverini & have loved every one. And they aren't all about sewing and quiliting, but the relationships of the women in the quilting guild & the ages of the women span from 20-80 so it appeals to all. I am 33 and loved it as did my 60 something mom.

philip gulley has a series very similar to the Mitford books. just good clean reads.

For alot of laughs, Ann B. Smith. Her Miss Julia books are a MUST

The Ladies of Covington series are quite good.

I read a book called "Left to Tell" by a woman who survived the Ruwandan Massacre. It was very interesting to see how she relied on her faith to get her through. There are lots of books out there right now about real life social justice issues and how faith plays into life, even at it's most difficult.

Even if you're looking for fiction, it would be interesting to throw some of these into the mix occassionally.

My MIL reads a lot of Christian fiction. Not too long ago she gave me "Leave it to Claire" by Tracey Bateman. It was about a divorced woman dealing with life and faith and moving on. It had a book guide at the back of it. Strangely enough it was sitting on the shelf right next to "Left to Tell" when I looked for the title of that one so I thought I'd suggest it. If you look it up, it might lead to other Christian fiction.

Personally, my first choice would be non-fiction biographies, but mixing it up would be good.

The Wednesday Sisters was an excellent book. I don't remember any scenes that you might find inappropriate but I cannot promise.

And here I thought that church folks had sex. I guess not...

:dance3:

:lmao: I'd rather do it than read about it! ;)

I don't know, I just don't like those kinds of books. My sisters laugh at me but I've never cared for them or the "she's in love, she loses him, she finds love again" books (think Danielle Steele--eek!!)

This should be Ann B. Ross. :)

Love those books. In fact, I've read all you listed so if you read this thread again, Hogfan, I would love it if you'd PM me anytime you read some similar to these books and let me know the title!! :)

I love Adrianna Trigianni books: Lucia, Lucia
Queen of the Big Time
Big Stone Gap series
Very Valentine

I also enjoy Elizabeth Berg books.

Have fun with your book clubs. I'd love to be in one! I usually read a book and discuss it with my clients from time to time. :)
