We are in the process of booking our 1/29/2005 7 night Western Cruise. Our DS will be 4 and our DD will be 3. Any insights on cruising with kids??? None of us have been on a cruise before.

I'm assuming that excursions are pretty much out of the question for them. Does anyone have any experience with "reluctant" toddlers' reactions to the Oceaneer Club? While this is certainly a family vacation and we aren't looking to ditch our kids (although it's tempting :teeth: ), DH and I would like to enjoy some isolated adult only moments such as the spa, adults only pool, Palo's, etc.). How about this age group at CC? Sorry for all the questions, but my mind is racing and I know this is the best place to come!

We took DD3 and DD4 on the Magic in March. We did not do any Disney-sponsored excurions because of their ages. They were also reluctant to stay in the clubs alone, even though they were together.

Here are my observations:

They got exhausted by dinner time. They did much better on the days they took short naps in the afternoon. DD3 fell asleep during dinner several times. They both fell asleep every time we went to a show.

They fought with each other a lot. I think being cooped up together for such a long time really got to them. We ended up separating them for periods of time. Whether it was just to take one kid to the hot tub, and the other to the Mickey pool. We actually enjoyed our own time with each kid.

They were reluctant to stay in the labs without us. The first night DD4 wanted to stay and DD3 did not. When DH went back to get DD4, she became hysterical. I think she forgot that DD3 would not be there and she was afraid we weren't coming back. We stayed in the Club with them a couple of times throughout the week so they could play. They spent a lot of time looking over their shoulders to make sure we were still there. Finally, we told them that we were going on a date and they could not come along. They stayed in the Club and loved it. They didn't want to leave. I wish we had insisted they stay before then. They would have had a lot more fun.

We had early seating and there was NO WAY they would have made it to late seating. They enjoyed getting dressed up for dinner although they didn't eat much throughout the week. I think they were distracted too much during dinner to eat.

I was amazed at how patient they were waiting to have their pictures taken with the characters. DD4 was apprehensive at first. She was afraid of Santa, the Easter bunny, etc. The first character we saw was Pinnochio. He got down on the floor with them. After that, she wasn't afraid of any character. We had to wait quite a while for Mickey on formal night. They didn't complain at at. We started out having their pictures taken separately, but started having them together toward the end. I wanted to buy every single one. The looks on their faces are priceless.

Castaway Cay was the BEST. They both loved it. I brought sand toys and they spent the whole day playing in the sand and in the water. We took beach chairs to the edge of the water and watched them play.

I had a lot of expectations of my kids when we went on our cruise. Some of them were unrealistic. Remember that they are still little kids and they have limitations. They will have a blast - and so will you.

If you have any more quesitons, I'd be happy to answer them.

Thank you so much. That's exactly the type of information I was looking for. Believe it or not, the first dinner seating is already filled, so we're signed up for the second but waitlisted for the first. My fingers are crossed that in the next 9 mos. we'll get our preferred time. I can't even imagine keeping the kids up that late.

Did you have to spend most of your evenings in your stateroom?

We were also wait-listed for early seating. We booked 6 months in advance. When we got our KKTW cards, we found we had gotten early seating.

I think if you still have late seating when you board, you can go to dining changes and get it changed. They are very accomodating.

We were able to keep the kids up until around 9:30. One night they stayed up until 10:00. They were really tired and slept beautifully. They slept until around 7:00. We didn't get to enjoy much of the night life, but we were not disappointed, there was so much ot do during the day, that we were tired by then too. BTW, the kids clubs stay open until 1AM. They tend to play movies in the late evening. If your kids get tired, they can fall asleep on a mat. As a matter of fact, when we went to pick up the kids after brunch at Palo (don't miss it), they were laying on mats watching a movie, so they try to get them to have a rest during the day too.

We just sailed on the Magic on 4/17. We had late seating but wait listed for the early seating. When we got our Key to the World cards, we still had late seating and I was devastated!

First thing when we got on board, I headed to table where they take care of seating arrangements. I had no problems at all changing to early seating--he did it within 30 seconds. The plus side is that all the Palo reservations were in the same room so I just left that table and hopped into another line.

I worried for weeks about the late seating as we have small children too. All that worry for nothing. If you don't have it when you get your cards, just do it first thing when you get on board. BTW, we had a full ship with tons and tons of kiddos but it still wasn't a problem to change.

Happy sailing!!

Thank you both so much! We are sooo excited about this I can't stand it! But I also know the key to our enjoyment will be keeping the kids happy. We don't plan for this to be our only cruise, so I'm willing to stick to the more age-appropriate activities/time schedule know I'll get to do more at another time!

We have deliberately picked this cruise time since both DD and DS will be in the same age category. They're quite fond of each other and hope this will encourage them to hang out together in their own special place. The fact they can nap in front of a movie is a huge plus.

Thanks again for the feedback and encouragement.

My DS was 3 the last time we went in 2001. The only time he didn't wan't to go to the kids club was when they went to the theater to do shows. He only liked staying at the club.

Anyway he pulled me around the ship all that afternoon. What he really wanted to do was ride the elevators, but he kept calling them alligators. 'Come on daddy let's ride the alligators. Once I finally figured out what he was saying I had been on the elevators about 10 times. I kept trying to figure out what deck the alligators were on. It was funny and I had a blast with DS that afternoon running all around the ship.

He did get exhausted at dinner (early), but after 20 min snooze he was ok for shows or ping pong after that. He had no problem at kids club at the night we went to Palos.
