Subtropical Depression 22 Forms Southeast of Bermuda
As of 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Subtropical Depression 22 was near 28.6 north, 59.9 west or about 385 miles southeast of Bermuda. A Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for Bermuda. The depression is moving to the west-northwest near 15 mph with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. The estimated minimum pressure is 1009 millibars, or 29.80 inches. An upper-level ridge of high pressure will continue to steer the system to the northwest during the next several days before it stall just off the Carolina and Virginia coasts during the middle part of the week. The system will be in an environment that is not incredibly favorable for development, which means that the system is forecast to become a tropical storm during the next 24 hours, but not a hurricane.
Tropical waves are located along 32 west, south of 16 north, along 51 west, south of 20 north, and along 73 west, south of 20 north. All waves are moving westward at about 12-16 mph. We don't see any signs of organization from any of these tropical waves at this point. The upper-level low north of Puerto Rico should create some shear over the waves along 50 west and 72 west during the next couple of days. As a result, development is not expected over the weekend. The wave along 32 west is also partially under the influence of an upper-level low over the far eastern Atlantic.
