Substitutions at TS restaurants?

I know that if you get a price-fixed 3-course meal at a TS restaurant, substitutions are not allowed. Are substitutions allowed if you order an entree a la carte? Could you swap one side dish for another?

It totally depends on the restaurant. Some will specifically say on their menu - no substitutions.

However, if you inquire, they may allow you to substitute another item. Some places do actually give you a choice of a few different sides, such as at the Turf Club at SSR, they allowed you to get fries or veggie slaw with their sandwiches/burgers. I am always looking for a good substitute for fries.....they are pretty cheap to make, so not all restaurants will let you substitute for something like that.

Worse you can do is ask and they say no.....

Depends entirely on the restaurant's individual policy. For example, reports are that Le Cellier will allow substitution of a side dish for another item that accompanies a different entree, but they will not substitute a side dish that is offered as part of its separate side dish menu. For example, you cannot switch your mushroom risotto that accompanies the filet for asparagus off the sides menu, but you could switch it for the mashed potatoes that come with the NY strip.

Thanks for the tip! DH and I are thinking of trying to get an ADR for Le Cellier, so it's like you read my mind! When I asked the question, I was actually thinking of whether or not they would substitute the risotto for either mashed potatoes or the potato gratin side dish that comes with one of the other steaks, because I prefer to have some kind of potato with steak, and I do love filet mignon. I didn't think they would give me one of their more "specialty" side dishes as a substitute. Thanks!
