I just paid all my bills automatically for things like domain names and web servers and this included the payments for my shop upkeep. I have a small store selling mainstream consoles from 1995 onwards. But it's not profitable - indeed, the big ticket items would sell at a loss. I simply can't compete. So I'm trying to shut it down. Had I just not paid, it would have been shut down for me for free! As it is, I just parted with money for a thing I never use (it's on permanent suspension at my setting).

Stupid, STUPID ice cream.

Not necessarily stupid. I don’t know how these things are handled in the UK, but here if you just default through non payment it can affect your credit rating, which in turn affects your ability to get jobs, get insurance, get a loan if you need one, etc. It causes a lot more headaches in the long run than just paying what you owe and shutting it down yourself.

I would have done it the way you did even if I was aware that it would be shut down for free if I went into default. I don’t think it’s stupid.

Actually, that's a very good point. Hadn't thought of it like that. Thanks, @fla4fun!
