Stupid itunes/ipod question

When you download a movie/tv show/song from itunes, does it stay stored on your computer's hard drive? Or does it stay stored in some cyberspace itunes place?

I'm trying to figure out if all that my kids have been downloading are going to bog down my computer!

I think they do stay on your computer. I can listen to the songs in my library on my computer.

They go to the hard drive and take up space, especially video files which are huge compared to music files.

But with iTunes I believe you can delete the file and it will not charge you to download it again. I might be wrong about that, but it's been a long time since I deleted something I downloaded.
