When and Why did MGM Studios name get changed to just Studios?

Oh, gosh, it has been awhile... I know there were rummors about this way back in 1999 or 2000. I don't know why.

It's still Disney-MGM Studios, but Disney downplays the MGM part.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong...But, I think I read a post here that the Disney/MGM contract was only for 7 or 10 years, so Disney is trying to make a gradual change as opposed to one day MGM is gone.

I've heard that sometime in 2005 the "MGM" name will be dropped altogether and it will become just "Disney Studios."

I notice that in the latest WDW vacation planning DVD that the "MGM" in the Disney-MGM Studios was actually GONE! I didn't notice that last year when I was there. But if you look at the DVD or video, you'll see the missing MGM in the segment about that park!

This is just another example of what cheerdaddy referred to. They've been referring to it as "Disney Studios" in the videos for a number of years, and more recently have taken to digitally removing "MGM" from some of the park images. It's nothing exclusive to the new video.

CM have been instructed for years now to refer to it as the Disney Studios. MGM doesnt run it and they dont feel they should get credit for it in their thinking.
