So we stayed a few days in a studio(Room 7954) at Kidani this past week.

I must say I wasen't impressed. The decor of the room looked tired and dull. Whats up with the paper plates and plastic fork and knives? With the paper and plastic I almost felt second rank.

Also the decor of the very looooong hall ways looked just ordinary and dull not what I actually had expected. All though the collection of arts at the elevators was nice, they could spice up the hall ways with some more fancy art or paintings.

The savanna view however was great, me and my DD enjoyed the view of different animals

I know the rooms are getting a makeover, and hopefully the rooms will be more inspiring than the one we visited.

We also stayed in a 1BR at SSR and that room was way more appealing than the studio a AKV - even though I missed the view. The walk at both SSR and AKV is almost the same:crutches:

Maybe the 1BR or 2BR at AKV are more nice than the studios?

The rooms that received the makeover are they looking more inspiring than the curent ones?

Overall I liked the theming, but it would have been nice if more effort was put into the hall ways.

Studios get paper plates for very sound reasons:
  • Studios do not have dishwashers
  • DVC points stays do not get daily housekeeping
If you combine those two facts with "Florida," the odds on real plates not being a hot gross mess by T&T on day 4 for most stays is 0.

1 and 2BR units have full kitchens, with dishwashers. So they get real plates.

This is standard at all DVC studios.

Yes unfortunately.

Sorry but I think that is a poor excuse for not providing real plates and real cutlery. Visitors could just do the dishes, soap and utilities to do it is present. Why not provide plastic cups and not real cups and glasses also?

To me that is a poor excuse for saving money and not providing what is actually needed.

When most people go on a deluxe vacation they don't expect paper plates and plastic cutlery.

Regards

Also in the studio there isn't a whole lot of space for washing loads of dishes. Unless you do, I wash, you dry and put away. I'd say most people don't want to deal with that on vacation.

We do hand wash the coffee mugs as we use them and leave them on the counter with a towel underneath.

Visitors could. But they don't.

It's not about "saving money," as I suspect providing reusables would pay for itself. The problem is that a lot of people are slobs, and when you add in a lack of daily housekeeping + no dishwasher... :crazy2:

If you want a high-end experience, the DVC studio may not be a fit for you.

Originally studios did have regular dishes and forks, DVC changed that a few years ago citing public health reasons for the change. I found it odd that plates were a health issue but drinking glasses are not.

My guess is that they wanted more people staying in one bedrooms or that housekeeping didn't want to deal with the dishes.

:earsboy: Bill

Housekeeping can and does replace the glasses and cups between guests, they can not carry a full set of dishes.

I would prefer real plates and cutlery too. We eat breakfast in the room most mornings and I don't like flimsy plastic utensils. But I can understand why they don't provide real dishes since there is no dishwasher and not enough room for a dish drainer on the counter. When we stay in studios, we provide our own plastic plates and bowls that we keep in our Owners Locker. I should put some decent cutlery in our locker but since we usually stay in 1BRs I haven't bothered to do that.

DVC did remove the real glasses and coffee mugs a few years ago after a TV show ("Inside Edition" maybe?) planted a hidden camera in a room at the Contemporary hotel and filmed a housekeeper drying the glasses with the same towel she used to clean the bathroom. Ugh. Disney's response was to remove the glasses and mugs from the studios and replace them with Styrofoam cups. The reasoning was, there is no dishwasher in the studios and the non-hotel DVCs (OKW, SSR) weren't set up to allow housekeeping to wash and replace the glassware when they cleaned the rooms.

Many of us protested and DVC relented. They installed equipment at the non-hotel DVCs so they could wash the glassware. The DVCs co-located with hotels already had access to those facilities. They instructed housekeeping to replace the glassware when cleaning the room. So thanks to all those who protested, we were able to keep the glasses and mugs. I've been a member for over 10 years and have never had anything other than paper plates and paper bowls during that time. If they ever did have real plates, bowls and cutlery in studios, it was before I purchased my first contract back in 2005.

People actually stop looking for hidden Mickey's in the carpet :goodvibes to notice other hallway decor? :confused3

DVC had removed the glasses from some resorts for a while. They put them back once commercial glass washing machines were installed.

I think it is noted that studios have paper plates and plastic cutlery. Sorry you missed that. We would bring a sharp knife and cutlery.

I take zero issue with the paper plates and plastic cutlery because there is no way most guests would be doing dishes. Four days of dirty dishes in Florida = bugs (yuck) + stink (eew). Our last room already smelled like pee, no need to make it worse!
