If you cosign a student loan, does it show up on your credit report?

Yes...it absolutely will show up as an obligation on your credit report. It will go against you in terms of outstanding balance due and credit available.

It will remain on your credit report until the loan is fully satisfied.

If the student defaults, they will come after you for the money.

Please be aware that in most cases, student loans cannot be discharged in bankruptcy either. If the student cannot pay, you will be on the hook.

Don't know about initially but if the student defaults...it's your loan.

And if that happens the loan companies have all the power with student loan repayments, including wage garnishment, etc.

Yes! Co-signing on ANY loan shows up on your credit report. If your student pays it off, it's good for your report. If the default, it'll ding your credit too.

And if that happens the loan companies have all the power with student loan repayments, including wage garnishment, etc.
