Strollers on airplanes

When bringing a stroller with you on the plane, do you have to check it through, or is it something you can bring on the plane itself? I've never travelled with children on an airplane before, so this may be common knowledge for everyone else, but I'm pretty naive to it.

typically a stroller is gate checked. it still goes in the cargo area, but you hand it over at the gate after getting a special tag from an agent at the desk and pick it up at the gate when you arrive. there may be airline specifics.

I travel all the time with my toddler...just take it to the gate and they will give you a gate check tag. right before you board the plane you leave it and they put it under the plane. When the plane arrives at your destination take your time getting off the plane, no need to rush because they take there time getting all the strollers off the plane and you would just be standing with a toddler waiting for it...have a great flight

IIRC arent strollers also considered, oh I dont know what the word is, but basically they wont promise no damage to them? Thought I read something about an expensive stroller getting bent, or damaged badly in some way and the airline pretty much said, tough.

We gate-checked our stroller in May with no problems, but we had a zipbag that the stroller fit in (came with the stroller). If you don't have one, get one--there's a big red one at travelingwithkids.com for $15. Our bag was filthy when we got the stroller--hate to think of putting the GrandPrincess in the stroller if all that dirt had been on it instead of the carry bag.
