My DSs are 6 and 4.5. The last trip we took to Disney we got away with using two umbrella strollers, but since then my DS6 had a bit of a growth spurt. He is skinny and only weighs 48lbs, but he is almost 50in tall. I was considering purchasing a double stroller as I know there is no way he will survive the week in the parks without one. Has anyone used a stroller with a taller child who appears to be over the weight restrictions for the majority of the strollers I have seen. If so which one did you use and how did it work? I would prefer to bring my own stroller for the trips back to the resort and can't see dropping over $120 to rent a stroller if I can buy one and resell it after we use it for a week.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

my DD isn't quite that tall but she is 6 1/2 and can still sit in my Peg P3 no problem. Our last Disney trip she was 5 1/2 and did surprisingly well walking, she would hop on and off the back of the P3 throughout the day but rarely had to sit in it (she would occassionally if DS was on DH's shoulders).

Honestly, I think you would be better off renting a stroller at the park as much of a waste as it seems. My 4.5 yo is 48in and 45lbs. If he sits in our Peg Pliko it is really difficult to maneuver, the weight just bogs it down. I can't imagine trying to maneuver a double stroller with a 4.5 yo and a 6 yo sitting in it for the length of time you'd need it. Not to mention the pain it is to fold up and lug wherever you go. If you do buy your own I'd take both kids with you to the store and try the strollers out before you buy one.

We rented a double stroller while we were in the parks and it worked very well. Lots of room and easy to get around. Initially I was hesitant to rent one but we used it much more than I thought.

When our daughter was 4, we took a stroller but I hid it in the closet. We decided to go a half day at a time and see how she did. I was prepared to offer incentives to make it through the days without the stroller. But amazingly she made it all week leaving the stroller in the closet. Give it a try... if he can't do it get a sturdy one with a footrest - to keep his feet from dropping to the pavement while you are moving. I would stick with two strollers, those doubles are a pain in the but in crowds, through doors, and on buses. Also, there is a brand that has a standing platform on the back for an older child while the younger sits in the seat.

We have season passes to Dorney Park and go quite often. DS6 is usually okay at first but then tires after a few hours of being in the sun, and DS4.5 is dragging behind from the get go. We have every intention of taking breaks and going back to the resort, but not sure if I would feel comfortable not having a stoller for him since DS4.5 definitely needs one and that would spark some sibling rivalry. I asked DS6 last night if he would be willing to walk the entire time and he said "Yes", followed up by a quick "And I would like to sit too". I have considered the Sit and Stand, but my DW thinks DS6 will want to sit in a comfy, shaded seat like DS4. Renting is always an option, although it would not be my first choice. Thanks for the opinions, and please keep them coming. I have some time before I need to make a decision.

Not sure if this will help but...last year we rented a double stroller for our length of stay from the parks(we were able to show our reciept at each park and get a stroller sometimes we park hopped to 2 or 3 parks in one day it was so nice to just show the reciept and not wait in a line)... my DS8 and DS 3(which DS3 at the time was size of average 5 year old and weighed 45lbs) they sat very comfortably in a double stroller at all the parks...the strollers are different at animal kingdom and MGM but they were all very easy to push and there are lots of ideas I have seen here as to how not to lose your stroller...we really didnt have a hard time finding it but I plan to rent again this NOV and use some of the ideas...We encouraged our DS8 to walk as much as possible but sometimes I made him ride when the crowds were too thick or when it was dark( I was very paranoided that they might get lost in the dark)...the only downside was coming back to POP at the end of a late night and having to carry all 45lbs of my sleeping DS to the 90's building...Good Luck with whatever you decide and have Tons of fun :wave2:

Probably I would just rent a double for the length of your stay and show the reciept at each park. If they were younger there would be more choices for you. But if you buy a stroller for this trip, are you EVER going to use it again?

Good luck! Your kids at at such a FUN age for Disney magic! :thumbsup2

I also have this same stroller dilemma. Our past 2 trips we used a kolcraft side by side double umbrella stroller. But that stroller has long been retired as my kids are now a combined 80 lbs. I'm thinking about bringing a good single umbrella and then renting another single as needed for my 6 yr old.

We are considering the Litaf Pick-up for our 6 year old. It clips onto the back of the stroller and has a seat or standing platform. You can check out ebay item number 170006122621 or just google it. Runs around $80 shipped brand new and you can unload it easily on ebay when you are done with it. Your two guys can take turns sitting on it. My 6 year old definately wants to sit at the parks. We took a stroller when we took a solo trip with just him in May. I firmly believe that it helps him last longer (and behave better  ) in the parks.

Thanks Anniegirl. I will check it out.

I noticed the weight limit for that is 48 pounds and I would wonder what it might do to the stroller it is attached to - would the weight pull anything out of place? Plus, the stroller doesn't look like it can be folded with that on and according to the page I found, it weighs 10 pounds.
Sounds like it could be a lot of trouble.

How in the heck do you push the stroller then with a large child between you and the handels of the orginal stroller? :confused3

I just checked it out, and I have to agree with dzorn. Doesn't look to be an option for us as that could be very uncomfortable, even more uncomfortable than renting a double for the week.

My DW swears they will both be able to fit, and be comfortable, in a double jogger as a friend of hers has one and her DS6 fits fine (he is a bit shorter than my DS6, however). I told her I want to see my kids in one before I spend the money for one. Although our kids are older we may be having another child in the near future so it would not go to waste completely as we could use it for the next two years or so should they fit this year. After that I will just list it on ebay and try to get about half of what I paid for it. I understand the whole stroller on the bus thing as we have already done the tandem stroller (my wife calls it "the limo") when the kids were 3 and 1.5. That is a lot heavier than a double jogger from what I understand and we still had two smaller kids to tend to. Not the easiest thing in the world to do, but having two kids enjoying themselves in the park because they are comfortable, and therefore, having two adults enjoying themselves in the parks because the kids are comfortable, is worth the hassle on the bus.

Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I felt the same way about renting as you do (waste of money), until I rented last year for my 3 yr and 5 yr olds. The kids were too big and heavy for my double graco and we had a 9 mth old at the time also. We brought a single stroller for the little one and rented a double for my older two. All I can say is, WOW! Their double rentals are sooooo easy to push, even with larger kids in them. That alone makes them worth every penny we spent! We tried one day in AK with the two older ones sharing a single maclaren and the fighting was enough to drive me crazy. We will definitely be renting again for them this year (they are now 4yrs and 6yrs).

I think you will have a hard time finding a stroller to purchase that fits your kids and that they will fit safely in without being over the weight limit. If you still really want a double, you could check out the maclarens. My 6 yr old can still squish into my single maclaren (she is 49 1/2 inches, 45 lbs) but it definitely doesn't handle as well. I'd imagine that the double would be a bit hard to handle with two larger kids in it but you could try.

We are in a similar situation. My brother and sister-in-law just bought a double jogger. We put our kids in it to see if we liked it, but my oldest daughter (which is 46" tall) was too tall. Her legs hung off the front and I didn't think it would be comfortable enough for her.

We are still trying to decide what to do as well.

My youngest DS will be 4 next year when we make our first trip to the world and he hasn't used a stroller for awhile now, however I am planning on keeping the option of a stroller (renting) and maybe even taking one from home in case he gets tired. He weighs about 38lbs and is almost 40 inches tall now but is built like a football player and I am concerned he will not fit in a standard umbrella stroller by next year. Are the strollers at the parks bigger? Are they comfortable? Should I bring a blanket to cushion the seat?

Well, we made our decision. I purchased a used Combi double stoller off of ebay. We spent some time at Babies R Us this week and had the kids try out the strollers. I think the sit and stand would have worked just as well, but I really liked how the Combi tri-folded and I liked having a shade for my DS6. It was much lighter than the sit and stand as well. My sons are at the total weight limit right now, but I pushed them around the store quite a bit and it was very easy to maneuver and seemed like it would hold up for the time we are there in Disney. DS6's knees were up in the air, but he seemed comfortable, and it will provide just enough comfort over walking and a good break from the sun for the amount of time he will need to use it. I can't remember the last time my 6 year old was in a stroller other than our last trip to Disney last October, but I know he will need one. For the times he walks, my DS4 with have all the room to himself.

I got my MacClarlen (sp?) last week and i'm set. DS is able to nap in it and everything. Took him for a walk in it, he was quite comfy. It was pricy but if we can use it other than in WDW i'll feel like I got a good value. He's 42 lbs and the limit is 55 so I'm hoping to get a couple vacations out of it. Came to $116 at Toys R Us with a coupon and a $10 off voucher from my toys r us visa. I just have to hope its not stolen when we're there
