I got a Amish starter from someone at work. My wife did what the directions said. As she was going to bake the bread she noticed something. Parts of what looked like a straw wrapper with a hair tangled around it. Needless to say we tossed it out and just started a new one. We have gotten 2 others since and now we are overly paranoid about getting something gross. so we just make a new one every time.
I know this is something that never happens and anyone. And I should just get over it. I just can eat the bread without thinking about what i saw.
I just pulled my last loaf out of the freezer the other day for a church party. When I make it if I can't give away starter to friends i just make extra loaves and throw them on the freezer. They are great to have around for school or church stuff.
I do make the bread that uses a box of pudding mix though and then you sugar and cinnamon the loaf pans. So yummy!!!
I had a starter in my fridge that was probably 7-8 years old when I used it - no worries. The starter I have right now is at least a year old -we go through phases
I don't generally pass on the gift, I measure out the starter I need for the recipe plus 1 to keep and then I toss the rest.
You can replace the oil with applesauce and I like to add golden raisins

This is the one I've made too. I sometimes use chocolate pudding and chocolate chips, along with the cinnamon sugar. YUM.
The OP asked about what to do if you can't give the starters away on the first day. Just squish the bags for your friends, and tell them what day they are on when you give it to them. No problem!
I don't know how one doesn't die from this, but I have gotten a million of those startes and made the bread, and eaten it, every time and have never died yet.
Yes, this recipe says to put in the refrigerator. I have never done that. Ours always sits out on the counter. And I still leave it on the counter and just ignore that part.
