Strep throat?

What are the major signs of strep?

I havent had it for years so Im a little foggy on the symptoms.

My throat is raw, I have a fever and ache all over. I sound like Ive been chain smoking for a week.

Help?

For me, the pain is REALLY bad...actually made me cry once. I'd go to the dr. ASAP. Feel better!

sort throat, fever, aches, headache, nausea, and sometimes a fine rash on your torso (feels like sandpaper)

no way to tell strep without a culture. sometimes horrible looking throats are NOT strep. sometimes normal looking throats ARE.

no way to treat a viral sore throat with antibiotics. in fact, BAD idea to do so.

The last time I had it, it was fever, very sore throat, and an overwhelming exhaustion, which hit me all of a sudden like a ton of bricks.

I just came off a massive does of Cipro 2 weeks ago anyway, youd think that might help anyway?

I got it a few years ago (I was in my 30s). The first day I just felt under the weather, tired, lethargic and achy. I had a temp of 99.5. I figured I was just coming down with something. Oh, and my throat felt "funny." By the next morning, I had a temp of 102 degrees, a savage sore throat, and my tonsils were pus covered. I went to the urgent care clinic (naturally it was a Sunday) and that's what I had.

I don't think your Cipro would have helped.

I used to get Strep all the time when I was a teen. Then, I went like 15 years w/o getting it and now I've had it twice in the last few months.

When I had it a few months ago, my ear hurt worse than my throat. That was a first.

When I had it last week, I had a sore throat, swollen neck glands, sore ear, and spots in my throat.

I think strep comes on really fast. You may just have a scratchy throat and then within a few hours it get worse and you can't even swallow.

The last time I had it I also had a fever, aches, and could barely swallow.

I would go to the dr. because strep is nothing to mess with...if it goes untreated it can cause all sort of problems for ya.

well every body has their own reatctions, like mine is usually, a really bad sort throat, and i loose my voice compleately.
but the common symptoms are
sort throat, fever, aches, headache, nausea

i hope you get better..i know how it feels, i usually get it really bad at least once a year

might help get rid of it?
we don't even know what "it" is.
so i can't say cipro would get rid of it.
dh is a pediatrician and this is the time of year for crud to go around. you can't tell if it's strep without a culture.
antibiotics won't treat a viral pharyngitis (sore throat).
antibiotics to treat viruses will only cause resistant bugs.
and then you end up with a big pus filled abscess filled with methicillin resistant staph from the resistant bugs.
i know, dh is a pediatrician and is always draining them. and he always has to describe how much of the bloody cottage cheese like drainage comes out.
but if you WANT to take an antibiotic for a virus, no one will stop you.

Can you explain more about this. A few weeks ago (right after Thanksgiving)both DH and I had strep and were on antibiotics. Then last week we thought DH had it again because the sore throat was back. Doctor called in an antibiotic without testing. The next day (late night actually) DH ended up in the ER to due to majorly inflamed tonsil (peritonsil abscess??). It was filled with pus and actually popped and drained on our way to the ER. ER told him to keep taking antibiotic and referred to ENT. ENT wants tonsils removed.

OP, when I had strep I had a fever at times and also felt like I was hit with a ton of bricks. It totally knocked me out for a day or two.

My DD has strep throat righ tnow. She threw up, had 101 fever and her throat hurts so bad she cried from sneezing. She's been eating jello & soup. Her pediatrician said the test was VERY positive. This is her third time since fall to get it and that's not unusual. She gets it a few times a strep season.

DS1 & 2 just got over strep, and I just had it too..........after 2 rounds of antibiotics each we finally kicked it. I hope........my throat is still a little sore but I just quick my medicine 2 days ago, I'm hoping it'll stop being sore on it's own soon. If not, it's back to the DR. I go for ANOTHER culture, another round of medicine......$$$$$$$$.

So yes, adults can get strep, and it STINKS.

I didnt mean I was going to start taking antibiotics for a viral thing if thats what it is. I was simply making an observation like "Gee I just went through massive antibiotics for another issue youd think that could have helped me ward this off"


My ear has been bugging me too and this did come totally out of the blue. I was fine 2 days ago woke up yesterday with a swollen./sore throat and today has been really bad.
I took some Dayquil and it did help along with the chloraseptic lozenges.

Crap guess Ill be going to the Doctors tomorrow... grumble grumble... its pretty bad when your Doctor gives you a hug when you see her cause she knows you so well.

When my kids get strep, they get a stiff neck. It really scared me the first time it happened because I thought my son had meningitis. It must be a common symptom because the nurse at the pediatrician's office assured me that it was likely strep.

I get a sick feeling sore throat and a really bad taste in my mouth when I have strep. The pain actually makes me feel sick inside.
