Good morning, everyone. I was at a meeting most of the morning, so I'm running a bit behind. I don't know why this bank feels it has the right to cut in on my DIS time, but I guess since they give me money I have to do as they ask once in a while. What a nerve! Here is Thursday's edition. I hope you enjoy it.

In 1778, fashionable women of Paris never went out in blustery weather without a lightning rod attached to their hats.

In 1900 the third leading cause of death was diarrhea. (guess Pepto Bismal hadn't been invented yet)

In 1917 Margaret Sanger was jailed for one month for establishing the first birth control clinic. (certainly a woman ahead of her time)

In 1982 Larry Walters tied 24 weather baloons to his lawn chair in Los Angeles and climberd to an altitude of 16,000 feet. (Up, Up and away)

In the 19th century, the British Navey attempted to dispel the supersition that Friday was an unlucky day to embark on a ship. The keel of a new ship was laid on a Friday, she was named the H.M.S. Friday, was commanded by a Captain Friday, and finally went to sea on a Friday. Neither the ship nor her crew were ever heard from again. (maybe that why the Wonder sails on a Thursday.)

Pirates thought that wearing a earring would improve their eyesight. (when I told this to DH he asked if it was only the eye on the same side as the earring, Duh! and he's the samrt one in the family)

Snow angels originated from medievil Jewish mystics who practiced rolling in the snow to purge themselves from evil urges.

The title role of Dirty Harry, 1971, was originally intended for Frank Sinatra. After he refused it was then offer to John Wayne and Paul Newman who both turned down the role, finally being accepted by Clint Eastwood.

The Spanish Inquisition once condemed the entire Netherlands to death for heresy.

Westmount, Quebec, was the first city in Canada to be granted a coat of arms.

Have a great day!

Is this how Parisian women permed their hair?

I've heard of piercing ears to improve eyesight before--must be an old European thing because it's why my ears and my sister's and female cousin's were pierced when we were babies. And there's no truth to it--I have the worst eyesight.

Thanks! I can't believe the one about the lightning rods! :teeth:

This one leads to so many questions.....
Why?
Did he survive the adventure?
How did he get down? By popping balloons one at a time??
Was he wearing a seatbelt? :D
