Anybody been there recently? I want to take my nieces, but the last time I was there it was a depressing place. I don't want to subject little ones to that.

I went to see the Birds of Prey show.

It is a very depressing zoo, IMO.

However, the wolf exhibit was nice and there were several wolf cubs. There were also some snow leopard cubs. The snow leopard exhibit was okay. Better than some of the creepy indoor cagey ones.

I think the bird show is over now. :(

I don't know. I don't mean to be so down on it. I mean, any place that managed to breed snow leopards has to mean well...I just found the place to be very old looking and dirty.

I haven't been for a few years and I agree with your opinion. Kinda depressing.

If you don't mind a longer drive, some better options are Southwick's (Mendon) and Roger Williams in Providence, RI. They're both really nice, Roger Williams especially.

Roger Williams is a very nice zoo. Also I don't think the Franklin Park Zoo is bad either. Not on the same calibar as Roger Williams but still a nice zoo and a lot closer than Roger Williams.

Is Southwick the one where it looks a lot like a farm? Real large and not tightly packed in and they also let you ride camels and elephants too?

If it is that is a nice zoo too, but for me it was a long drive!

I've yet to go to the Stone Zoo and I've been meaning too. I drive by it alot and always think we should just swing by and see it.

Yes, that's Southwicks. It has greatly improved in the past few years. Many exhibits have been enlarged. It's actually a great zoo now! IMO, it may even beat out Roger Williams.

If you do go, be sure to go to their website. It has a discount coupon on it!

I like the deer area at Southwicks. Very pretty and it's nice getting up close to the deer. :paw:

I lived one town over and went there once when my children were small. I have to tell you then it was a depressing zoo, my youngest is 28.

I lived in Woburn when I was a child, and we used to go there alot. When I was small I thought it was the greatest place in the world! Though the aviary did smell something awful and it was soooo hot, lol. I haven't been there in 25 years or so though so I can't comment on the current conditions.

Seeing Stone Zoo in the comment line brought back lots of memories!

Oh I forgot about that part. You get to walk in the woods and feed the deer. That was cool except I remember some of the kids were chasing the deer and the parents were just allowing it. I wasn't happy.

Yeah, its definitely not the greatest of zoos concerning animals.

We usually only go for Boo at the Zoo at Halloween and to see the lights during the holiday season. Those are nice events there.

And Hi Jenny, fellow Woburnite! :wave2:

We love going to Southwick Zoo. It is so cool how they have the animals in their natural habitat. They have put a lot of money these past few years into the animals and grounds.
Roger Williams is nice as well and easy to get to. Thanks for the heads up about Stone Zoo.

I'm from Medford and grew up going there as well, though it's been many years since my last trip. I'm not crazy about zoos but when I go I like to go to Franklin Park Zoo - very nice and close to home! :paw:

I'm so sad about Stone Zoo. I think Rhode island will be a better choice for us.

This brings back good memories, I reameber when I was little my parents takingme and my brother there.........I looked at the zoo like I look at Disney now, a happy and fun place :goodvibes

well i was there recently and its getting better
its the best at xmas and halloween
the events there are great !!!

I live one town over also and I think it is a disgrace that we cannot have a zoo the caliber of Roger Williams. Sure Franklin Park is okay but really the neighborhood is not always the safest. Stone is an a wonderful setting on the water. When they redesigned it years ago they got the help of Lowell Thomas (Jim Fowler's mentor) to help them make it state of the art. I cannot understand why a little state the size of RI can have such a nice zoo and a place like Taxachusetts cannot.

I saw on tv the other day that Boston was the number one city for a high cost of living. Maybe if they had taken some "lobster dinner money" from the fat boys at the "Big Dig" we could have a nice zoo in a nice area.

It is a shame that Boston doesn't have such a high quality zoo that other states have.
I'm a Roger Williams zoo member and go all of the time. I love it there :)

Hello fellow member! I definitely recommend RWZ. Franklin Park was actually fun and it wasn't as bad a neighborhood as I remembered it being.
