Stinky luggage?

Not sure if this is the right forum to use, but figured someone may have a "creative" fix.

About 2-3 months ago, I purchased a piece of luggage from Macy's. Well, once we got it home, it smelled funny. I know all newer luggage has a distinct odor. But, this one smelled unusually funny/bad. We decided to let it air out for a couple of weeks to see if that would fix it. No go. Then, we used some odor spray that has always worked for us before. Still does not work. Then, we put some newspaper/baking soda/dryer sheets and sealed it for a couple of weeks. No change at all.

Well, now we are under the gun as far as the trip is concerned. I don't want to pack all my stuff, and then once we get down there, have everything smell funky.

Does anyone have any good ideas?

Do you have Febreze of a similar product? Its a spray you can use on upholstery etc. to get rid of smoking/pet smells. Otherwise pack everything in plastic bags with somethng that smells nice (like dryer sheets) and use it for the laundry on the way home.

Update: Nancy, thanks for the article! I tried the Ozium from that article. It is significantly and noticably better.

It still has a new suitcase smell, but now it is a very normal new suitcase smell, and not the nasty smoky one from before.

I will probably spray it down a couple more times before I start packing, but even if it stays as it is now, it is definitely an improvement!

I would suggest, I do it even w/ our luggage.. I pack everything in plastic baggies (space safers) w/ dryer sheets...
