Day 18 – Nassau

Tuesday 31st May

Today is our Nassau day, and as we wake up around 7.30am we see the shoreline coming into view. There are some other large ships already in port, but nothing as large as the Dream. We slow right down to approach our dock and the final stages seem to take forever – better safe than sorry though, and I certainly wouldn’t fancy this job. We’re in no hurry to get to shore here, so go down to Enchanted Garden and have a leisurely breakfast. This place is lovely, much nicer than Cabanas and it’s great to be properly waited on for drinks, eggs, etc. Eat loads…far too much…including fried egg and mickey waffle…yum!

After breakfast we walk back past the lobby atrium where we see the princess meet and greet has ust finished – must remember to do this tomorrow, as there are six of the girls here all together. Drop the kids off at the Oceaneers club for a while almost walking into Goofy as he tiptoes out of the nursery, dressed in his PJs.

Helen and I then go for a little explore around the ship. We decide to check out the spa as we have passes for the Rainforest room tomorrow and while we are there we decide to get Emma an ‘ice cream pedicure’ session later (I kid you not!).

Pick up the kids from the club and decide to explore Nassau for a while. Have heard many stories about the commercialization of the island, and within a few minutes of getting off it proves to be right. We’ve not organized any excursions today – this is a rest day for us – so we just walk around the port and local shops for half an hour or so. To be honest, we’re not unhappy to get back on the boat, and the peace and tranquility of the Dream beats someone trying to sell you something every 10 metres.

Not entirely sure what ‘Drugs and Notions’ are…

Our one is definitely the best!

Kids are peckish so we grab ice cream, pizza and a drink, then relax with some mini golf for a while. The ship isn’t empty by any means; many people have the same view of Nassau as us it seems and stayed onboard. Unless you’re into shopping, there is plenty to do onboard.

Decide it’s time to do the Detective Agency activity. This is great fun, and very cleverly integrated with the ship. Kind of like Kim Possible at Epcot, but using picture frame to guide you around the ship. You can also do the game over many hours or days – it remembers where you are up to. We decide to complete the activity in one go, and I guess in total it took us about 45 minutes. Good fun for all the family, and a nice way to explore and work off some calories from lunch as well.

Midship Detective Agency – we found the puppies!

Character dance party in the lobby at 3pm follows, as Emma gets down with Goofy, Pluto, Donald and Daisy for 20 mins. A nice diversion that isn’t too heavily attended, so the kids get good time with the characters.

Emma goes off for her pedicure soon after, and the rest of us dress up for pirate night. I think we’re taking this much more seriously than most other people, but in for a penny, in for pieces of eight, arrrrr… Helen goes to pick up Emma. She comes back with a big smile, and painted nails, and gets into her pirate outfit too.

Off to dinner in EP again, and we realize we’re not the only people who have made the effort – about 50% of people have done something such as a bandana or a hat and maybe 25% have really gone for it like us. The servers are all decked out in pirate gear too, and the menu is similarly themed. We finish the wine from last night and have a selection of seafood based dishes, and some glorious desserts again. The quality is really high again tonight…really wonderfully presented too.

Our wonderful servers

After dinner we get into line for a picture with Capt Jack Sparrow and then head into the theatre for a showing of POTC 4. Lovely big screen with high quality 3D glasses and amazing sound too. Kids manage to stay awake throughout, and we all enjoy the movie, Emma in particular is glued to the screen throughout.

Onto deck 11 for the pirate show and fireworks to end the night. These really are amazing, much better than I expected, and the pirate theme on the big screen works really well too. After the fireworks there is a short show starring Capt Jack again – he descends by wire from the top of the funnel to the stage, and there is plenty of swordfighting too – very entertaining. When this is done the dance party starts in full swing with DJ and dancers, but the kids are starting to flag now. 5 minutes of dancing, a quick stop at the pirate buffet for cakes and it’s back to the room to find a new towel animal – Crush the turtle, we think :) Kids asleep in a few minutes, and adults soon after.
