Do I still have the mandatory TIP of 18% added on our check if we are NOT using the DDP?? We're a family of 6.

I don't normally tip 18% at a buffet...and we tend to do lots of buffets. More choices for the kids that way.
If the 18% is automatically added that is going to suck.

I'm working the math on DDP vs. No DDP.

Help!!!

Good question!!! We will be a group of 6 next May and I really am interested in seeing just how that is going to work. I want the option of tipping how I see fit - not someone mandating a certain amount. We are usually very good tippers, but at buffets I usually don't tip the same as a nicer restaurant. Just curious.

My family and I are going as a group of 6 in January 2009 and I was curious too. We will be on seperate DDPs though. My in-laws will have their DDP and we (there are 4 of us) will have ours. So I am curious as well.

My understanding is that the mandatory gratuity for parties of six and more was a completely separate tenet of the contract from that affecting the Dining Plan. (All the new contract will do is lower the current limit of eight down to six.) So, unless I'm mistaken, yes, families of six, not on the Dining Plan, will be subject to the mandatory 18% gratuity.

I agree with Bicker. The old standard of auto tip on parties of 8 was for any party of 8 whether on the ddp or not. So the only change is now it's a party of 6, so pretty sure it's still the same. Auto tip on parties of 6 no matter how you're paying.

Isn't it a mandatory 18% gratuity if on the DDP no matter how many are in your party?

No, tipping will be left up to the customer's discretion if the party is less than 6.

n2mm is correct. The 18% will apply regardless of payment method to parties of 6 or more.

The automatic gratuity/service charge will be for parties of 6 or more even if you get seperate checks. You're going in 2009, we have no idea what rules will be in effect.

Can I ask something dumb . We have 2 adults , 8yr, 4 yr old , 2 yr old and 6 month old at our trip in March . Will we be charged the 18% for being a family of 6 but two of those 6 people not being on the dinning plan plus one of those 6 poeple not even eating anything ?

Thanks
Sarah

You probably will not fall under the automatic 18% rule, but that's not assured.

THis is one I have no idea about! My thought would be they count the # in your parted to be seated and they do count the kids in that toal so you'd be a party of 6. The reason I say this is because when we went in 2005 there were 5 adults, 2 teens, 1 toddler and 1 infant and we were considerd a party of 9 everywhere we went.

One of the servers posted the complete language. You can look through the threads back when the union contract was negotiated. I don't rember what it said about counting kids under 2.

Well then that stinks.
No reason to charge 18% on a buffet.

But.....if that's their rules. I guess I can live with that. OR do more counter service, lol.

Thank you very much for the information!

Jennifer.

I agree, we are a party of 9 and was told the auto tip would be applied to our bill. BUT only 7 of us will be eating. We have a 2 year old and a 2 month old. I was told everytime I booked an ADR that the auto tip would apply because I am a party of 8 or more (even if all 8 are not paying/eating customers). So it goes by party SIZE not who if eating in the party. BTW this is for our trip NEXT week before the size changes from 8 to 6, so we are falling under the 8 in a party rule. So believe that 6 in the party whether eating or not the same rules will apply.

hmm this is something I know my dh would fight if the service is bad , However if service deserves a 18% tip or even more then we will be fine . Most Disney buffets we have gone to do not deserve the tips at all . But we like them cause most of them have Mickey and friends at them (witch means mom and dad can eat ) and its faster then a sit down meal with 3 kids .

hmmm maybe no DDP for us them and we will just do more counter service . I guess I really do need to think about the changes more .

So if I am a party of 4 on the DDP I can decide the tip for myself? If you have 5 or less in your party you can tip based on quality of service whether on the DDP or paying OOP??

taken from DDP brocure for 2008
Gratuities are not included unless otherwise indicated. An 18% gratuity will be added automatically for parties of 6 or more. A gratuity may also be added automatically for ordered items that are not included in the Disney Dining Plan (e.g. alcoholic beverages).

the bit where it says "A gratuity may also be added automatically for ordered items that are not included in the Disney Dining Plan". would surgest like last year when we were a party of 4 that when we got wine an automatic 18% was added to that bill.It dos`nt state 18% but you can be 90% sure they will add 18% if you order wine or an app
