Sticky Santa Question, Need Help!

Ok, we're participating in a Toys For Tots toy drive, and my six year old asks me, "Why do we need to buy toys for poor kids when Santa brings all kids toys anyway?"

I didn't have a good answer for her, I sort of mumbled 'well, Santa just does stockings', but I don't think she was convinced.

So, any other parents out there been asked this question?

Some kids aren't as fortunate as we are to have homes so it is more difficult for Santa to find them.

or

Because they have so little, Santa tries to provide them with things that they need (clothes, etc.) and asks people who have more to give something to those who have less.

Tough question! Let us know what you come up with (so some of us can use it as well if it works!)

You could tell her sometimes Santa needs a little help. Some kids don't get presents all year so once a year Santa asks all of us to help to make sure they have a very special Christmas with a enough toys to last them the year.

You tell them that you are giving them the "mommy or daddy" presents because the mommies and daddies cannot afford to buy them presents.

Well, in my family, Santa only brings one gift, the rest are from parents and other family. So I was told (and will tell my own kids once I have them) that because there are SOOOO many children around the world that Santa can only give one gift to each child (he only has a year to make all those toys, afterall! We don't want Santa to have to start a sweat shop!). So in order that poor kids get more than one present, we must give to charity.

That is what I would do. Tell them these aren't Santa presents, they are mommy and daddy presents.

I have told DD from the time she was old enough to understand that Mommy and Daddy has to pay for the stuff from Santa. This is why some of her friends get more than she does or vice cersa even though they were all good all year long.

I am on the board for a Toys for Tots type program and we have shirts for our distribution day that say "Santa's Helpers" on them. When the kids ask we just tell them that we help Santa because he has a BIG job to do and we make it a little easier on him". The kids never question that. It works every time.

Thanks, everyone, for those suggestions. The 'we're helping their mommy and daddy out' idea is great, as is the Santa's helpers-they'll love the idea that they're one of Santa's honorary elves!

Knowing my kids they'll ask if they can have a pointy pair of ears to really get in the spirit...
