I would argue that if you weren't looking for a certain type of feedback you wouldn't have specifically mentioned it was a plasma TV.

It certainly doesn't sound like a very relaxing home to either live in or visit - very strange behaviour!

My DH would tell me where to go if I told him he couldn't use certain rooms/things in the house. It's his home too.

I keep thinking this must be a joke!

It seems as though everybody here is obsessed with the Plasma TV more than me. I just like to use those two rooms for special occassions. I don't think it's that bad.

Okay. I'll admit I haven't read ALL the posts on this thread...but I'd love to give my 2 cents worth anyway

Our front room & formal dining area is considered "off-limits" ...to the kids toys. We have 4 kids, so toys multiply quickly.

We only allow food & drink in the kitchen area. (Except water...got to encourage those kidos to drink water!)

We have a "family" room that the kids can have their toys in and relax. The front room we like to keep clean. It is the first room upon entering the house. Every night, the kids read books in there. There is no TV, so it is our quiet room. My 4 year old even likes to take naps in there (on the chase lounge). And when we had 2 girls from the Ukraine come visit, they used it as their sleeping/quiet area.

We have room in our kitchen for our "everyday" table. We all usually eat there. Somedays, Mommy likes to be silly, and we get out the wedding china, set up the fancy dining room & eat pizza with the gang. Because it is not an everyday event, the kids have a blast eating in the dining room off the good china. It is a good balance between treating things with respect & care and living life.

I too have a formal dining room and formal living room, but they are not off limits. I don't care for the kids to eat in the living room but sometimes they sneak and still do. We also have a family room, that is where our TV is. the puter is in the living room, Right now my "formal dining room table" has library books and some other paper work on it, my formal living room has remains of my DD birthday party on it and a digital camera in the one chair. We don't really use it for everyday living as we use the family room, kitchen and breakfast room for that, but when we have party's everyone wonders between all the rooms and can eat wherever they want.(Growing up we had an off limits living room, except for holidays) except we had to pass thru it to go upstairs.

WOW! I didn't realize people lived this way. Seems a waste to not use rooms in the house. But to each his own.

We have two TV's. One 27 inch in the living room that's over 12 years old and a tiny tv/vcr combo in the bedroom that rarely gets used. I haven't watched my wedding video in 11 years and didn't video the birth of my child. I didn't even want to see that!

I think it was just the fact that you said you have a plasma tv (not cheap by any means) that people can only watch the videos you want to show to them on it & nothing more...

I, personally, would be burning that plasma tv to death watching every movie known to man on it... I say this b/c I have a normal 27" tv with 5.1 DTS surround and dont have the $$$ as a college student to buy a plasma OR LCD tv...

There's nothing wrong with having a formal room if you have the space for one, but to reserve the plasma TV just for company is a little extreme is all.

Seems to me if you were venting about them eating in that room you could've just said they were in the formal living room watching tv. Your the one who stressed the fact that it was a plasma TV reserved for company....so yes, that TV did becme the focus.

I just can't imagine living in a house and not being welcome or allowed to use the rooms there. It doesn't matter that there's a plasma tv. Heck, I don't care if you have gold plated couches. It's their house, too.

I don't get the saving things for special occasions -- like china or fancy silver or crystal or rooms. Isn't every day you are alive a special occasion? We eat off the fancy plates all the time because they are meant to be eaten from. We use the good linens because what's the point of having them if you don't use them. My DD has been drinking from crystal stemware at dinner since she was 4...who's more special than her in my life. Eating with her is a special occasion...getting to spend time with her is incredibly special. We use all the rooms in the house and everyone is welcome in them no matter the occasion or event.

It's just my opinion but I'd trade a thousand plasma tvs and unlived-in living rooms for a few hours of laying on the floor, eating popcorn and enjoying time with my daughter. The house, the rooms in it and the things in those rooms...they are just things that can and will be replaced in time. There is nothing truly special about them. What makes them special are the memories and times shared in them...which can't happen if you don't use them.

That's a beautiful sentiment And learning how to drink from fancy glassware at a young age will definitely help her when she's older because she won't feel self conscious using it either.

I do have to say I have china that I never ever use. It's not because it's expensive and meant to be looked at only. I inherited it from my Meme and I'm terrified of breaking it. It means a lot to see it in my hutch and remember her. And I have enough plates of varying degrees of specialness to wash and use as it is

I'm sorry, the story is true (yes, I'm a compulsive nut when it comes to my home and that's something I need to work on ) and that's why I think it will be a good topic for this new class the department wants to test this semester called The American Family (a Psychology based elective). I'm gathering different situations and social issues among family, etc. It's quite boring, but topics like this make it interesting. Thanks!
