Staying OnSite - Getting to Universal? Rental Car or Not

I'm planning a trip to WDW later this year where we'll be staying on-site and using the Magical Express shuttle service to and from the airport. However, we have annual passes to Universal and would like to use them on one day.

Has anyone ever been faced with this? Should I take a cab? Would that be expensive? Should I rent a car for one day? Can I rent one on-site in WDW?

Thanks.

We're renting a car in September, and we rented a car last December for this too. We stayed at BC in Dec. and rented from National at the Dolphin. This Sept. we're at BWV, so renting at the Dolphin again. Your other WDW option is the TTC, which also has National. My rate, with taxes and fees, is about $35 for the day, so it's the best way for 4 of us to get there and back. With that said, it's really quick and easy to get a car at the Dolphin, and if you have to take a bus to the TTC first, it may take up quite a bit more time.

Mears also runs a shuttle service from TTC, but I've heard there have been problems.

You can take a taxi. Cost will depend on where you're staying at WDW.

I was trying to determine the best way for 2 of us to get to Universal from Pop Century as well. If we rented a car, there would be an additional $10 parking charge at Universal. There is the Lynx bus that would be like $2-3, but seems like it would take a long time and you have to worry about catching the bus on schedule. Does anyone know how much a taxi would cost approximately?

Probably $35 or so each way, plus tip. What about a town car service? They all usually offer a flat rate for round trip transportation between Disney and Universal.

I've used the Mears shuttle and never have had any trouble, I know a lot of people have had trouble but I guess I have been fortunate. The cost in 2005 was $12 r/t. I had an ECV with me and they were very helpful. But this was the first time I have traveled with the ECV. You call them the day before to set up the pick up time and then you can call them at least 1 hr. before you want to be picked up. I have never had any trouble with this set up. I've gone in Jan, Feb, July and Sept. and never have had any problems.

I did try the Lynx bus once and never again, that took FOREVER to get there. I wound up taking a cab back because I didn't know at the time about Mears. HTH. :thumbsup2
