"Stay out of the Damn Lakes"- what about jetskiing or parasailing?

Hi all! DH and I are thinking about either doing the wave runner jet-ski thingies or parasailing in Bay Lake in September (early in the day, early in the trip). I know there is a chance that you can get splashed on the jet-ski, and I keep hearing Pete say "stay out of the damn lakes". I even repeated that phrase over and over to my DH last trip- "stay out of the damn bushes", "stay out of the damn puddles".... :rotfl:. True story. So anyway, then we're thinking about parasailing. You just are lifted off the boat, float around a bit (REALLY HIGH IN THE AIR ) and then are reeled back on to the boat.

Here's my question- would getting splashed by the water cause me to regret even THINKING about doing one of these or is it more the SWIMMING aspect that's dangerous?

Which would you guys do- parasail or jet-ski??

TIA!! :goodvibes

The amoeba lives in shallow water so you would be ok in the deeper water for jetskiing or parasailing.

I seem to remember the big danger being from churning up the crud on the mud/sand bottom in shallow water (that's where the amoebas are, I think). So if you are in deep water you are OK. Also, water temperature has something to do with it- the warmer the water, the more the amoeba flourish. Deeper water= cooler water.

I think we're going to do the Parasailing route.... you don't get wet by doing that...unless you fall out of the sky like one Diser did :scared1:

how about canoeing? Do they still do that at Ft W? Presumably you would be in the boat but if you fell out.....See Pete's PSA has had an impact on some people:scared1:

This past weekend's triathalon featured "a refreshing swim in Bay Lake"! All I could do was think of Pete and just shake my head... :sad2:

Hi DIS'ers:) I'm new here is there a link to Pete's PSA? I'm kind of afriad to ask but what's living in Bay Lake? I've been going to WDW literally since I was in my mothers arms and have always been told or heard not to go into BL but never the reason.popcorn::

You can hear Pete give his PSA on almost any podcast inthe last year or two. It is referring to all the lakes... As above posters mentioned there is a possibility of exposing yourself to a dangerous ameoba which in short devastates the brain and is fatal. Aligators can also be found in almost any waterway in Fla obviously gators can prove to be dangerous. Also there are Water Moccasins seen from time to time on the lakes right there at WDW. So at least 3 good reasons to stay out of the lakes.

Yes, I did the Danskin Tri at Fort Wilderness a couple of years ago. No problems because they monitor the swim route with lifeguards etc.

Thanks for the info. The gator issue goes without saying, but I didn't know about the ameobas. So yeah you're absolutely right 3 VERY good reasons to stay out of the lakes:scared1:
