Stateroom Mouse Ear Shaped Magnets... How to Determine the Bottom Edge?

Hey all,

I'm creating some custom artwork that I am hoping to get made up as two magnets for my friend and I to use on our stateroom door on our upcoming Disney Cruise. These magnets are going to be primarily circular in nature and I am hoping to place them on the upper left and right of the circular door number, to form them in the shape of Mickey ears, as is usual with the door magnet placements I've seen.

I have noticed that some magnets account for the little indent circular cut-in on the bottom corners where they would meet up with the main circular door number. For any of you who have done this sort of thing and have made custom ears to put on your door's circular number... how do you determine what size of indent the circular "ears" need to be to fit properly against the main number??

Just some tips and advice in order to have these ear circles properly rest against the upper sides of the circular number would be great...

Thanks!

I'd probably print out one of the dedicated mouse ear magnet images and use that as a guide for creating the circle.

Be aware there is an indented edge around the door, so your circle may need to be smaller than you think.

For my sun, I just took a really small, but pointy pair of (embroidery) scissors with me. I'm not sure I was supposed to, but they are only about 2 inches long. Anyway, I put my magnet up and then cut the hole right there.

So, top to bottom, my number hole is 7.5 inches + 1 mm (so just over the 7.5 inches). You can see that it was slightly larger than needed, but general consensus is the hole needs to be 7.5 inches.

From the number hole to the peep hole is 8mm or just over a 1/4 of an inch.

The peep hole is 1 inch.

I was told the diameter is 7.5 so I printed a template circle with that diameter and place everything around that to test out anything I print (before I laminate).

All I can tell you is the measurement I used. I am within a mm to 3 mm on any given area of my inner circle. This was on the Fantasy, if it makes any difference. For the most part, the 7.5" will be fine, but if you're looking for a tight fit, you can see where there are slight gaps with the fit of my sun over the number circle. It's possible my few millimeters will account for that, but just be aware that it's possible the fit won't be exact.

Or bring small scissors and make it a tad smaller, then trim when you go to mount it.

Same here. I just use 7.5 inches diameter and things always seem to fit.

Alright, I'm ordering some custom die-cut magnets and they want to know the width and height of the magnet. If we are to use the 7.5'' diameter as Mickey's "head/face", what should I enter as the width and height in inches for his "ears".

I initially thought to just half the dimensions to 3.75'' width, which on their site, automatically calculates the height to be 3.17''... but would be too small? I mean, Mickey's ears ARE smaller than his head, but even so, they aren't tiny. I just don't want them ending up to be too small in comparison to the door's number circle plaque.

Thoughts??

Well, if I were you, I'd get a couple of pieces of paper, cut out a rough circle to the right size and then a couple smaller ones. Trim the smaller ones until they seem right. I'm certain there's an exact percentage measurement for the ears to head, but you might do just as well to eyeball it.
