OP, don't forget to have your Junior take the PSAT this week. It's either Wednesday or Saturday in your area. You will likely have to pay a standby registration fee at this point. This is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship program, and many colleges use it to send brochures and additional materials to your student Yes, it's a lot of junk mail...but it's also a starting point of what's out there. You will get the scores in a couple of months...which will preview SAT scores, and give you a place to start with SAT prep.

Here, students take the PSAT at school for no cost. At my son's school, there are a certain number of spaces and they go to juniors first. Sophomores can register to take the test for practice after that.

Wow, free! We have to pay for it, both for sophmores and juniors.

OP Call your high school asap. If there test date is Wednesday, a nearby school may be testing on Saturday--so don't forget to ask.
