Started officially doing my training program that eases me into running from walking on Monday.

DH got me an iPod nano and the Nike+ kit and helped me get it calibrated. (It was way off from his, guess cause I'm so short?) Anyway, it rocks! :rockband:
(Despite the fact I've rung up a major bill on iTunes... :scared: )

I was surprised to see how far I went on Monday. I was way off on what I thought I was walking before! I thought I was putting in about 18 miles a week, but after using this Nike+ and driving around to make sure it was right it appears I was averaging around 25 miles per week walking!

I'm signed up for my first 10K - Race for the Taste (I know small to you marathoners out there!) and I was a tad worried about staying within the 15 minute pace and not getting picked up by THE VAN, but it appears I'm well within the pace according to Nike+ even with me still doing more walking than running right now.

What an awesome and simple motivator. Maybe I won't die after all! Wish me luck! :woohoo:

How fun! I've been using my old ipod mini. I've been trying to convince myself to upgrade to a nano and the nike+ thing because, you know, it would save me the cost of a Garmin and my mini's battery isn't reliable anymore...:rolleyes1

I'm glad to hear you like yours (and congrats on going farther than you realized- how great is that!). Do you have the Nike shoes? I read that you can attach the Nike+ to your laces, but I wasn't sure if it really worked, and I don't want to switch shoes...

Oh, and I'm not a marathoner YET, but 10k isn't small- that's a perfectly respectable distance in my opinion!

That's awesome! I've heard such great things about the Nike+.

I'm waiting for my Garmin to come in the mail. I've been using the gmaps pedometer ( http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ ), but I never know exactly where to turn around and stuff...so my pace times are never super accurate.

Congrats on chosing the 10K. I'm kind of scared of anything longer than a 5K, but I know I should do something a little longer before jumping into the 1/2 in January. But I'm such a baby :) Who's also nervous about the whole sweep issue...but I'm working on it!

Keep us posted!

Jen - I have New Balance shoes. I ordered something called the shoe pouch and you put the sensor in it and you put your laces thru it. Seems to work fine! With shipping I think I paid $7.99.

What is cool about the Nike+ thing is you can upload your runs onto their website and it shows you your progress. It tells me my distance, pace, calories burned (You enter in your weight.), etc. Because of the training program I'm using I type in custom times for my workouts, but you can enter in distances, too. A voice comes over the music and tells you how far you've gone, etc.

My DH has been using it for awhile and really likes it, I suspect if you don't have it calibrated correctly it can confuse you on what you're really doing...

Congrats on your new gear Shan! (of course I have no idea what the nike+ thing is) I am new to these competition boards and my first race is the minnie next month. I am doing both the 5k and the 15k. I am a little scared about the 15k and wish it was only a 10k. I am mostly a walker and have started incorporating jogging. I can walk a 13:30 min/mile, so you definately can walk these races. But I know what you mean, I am very nervous about the sweeper buses!

Hi Lexxiefern!

That is awesome about your upcoming events! You're gonna do great! :cheer2:

Here's the Nike+ website -

Both DH and I got our nanos from Apple refurbed thanks to the DIS budget board! The Nike+ thing you can get at Target, it was like $30.

Thanks Shan! I've only done two races, and both times I started wayyyy too fast even when I was thinking I was taking it easy, and I fell apart towards the end. I'm too clueless to deal with my watch, so I think a little voice telling me what's up will work! I so know what I want as a reward for the Minnie (or Mother's Day- I'll find a reason!)

Hi Shan :goodvibes

I giggled out loud :rotfl: when I read your post.

I got one of those Nike+ for Easter (my DH is an awesome Easter Bunny) last weekend and can't wait to program it. :woohoo: And, I also got a new iPod ~ pink of course :cutie: ~ that I've been loading up. AND ... I'm also doing the Race for the Taste in October! Because the RFTT is my first competitive event, I want to make sure I'm well prepared.

Now, with our new gear, we'll be able to train more accurately and be stylish at the same time ~ Ruth

I just got my Nike+iPod nano gear and found this thread! I'm hoping that it will help motivate me to get to the gym since I LOVE gadgets!

I went this morning and got it all calibrated, but screwed up the workout part so I didn't get credit for the two miles I put in on the treadmill.

Oh well, that will just make me really want to hit the treadmill again on Friday! I just wish it was waterproof for my swimming days!

Have fun with the new gadget. I have been given one too! I still love my Garmin for outdoor work. I have found the Nike+ just a bit off. I guess I must work on a better calibration with mine.
