Start date for insurance quote

Family is going on Dream sailing on August 3 to August 7.
But we will be leaving our home on July 27 and will be back to home by August 9.
I want to buy trip insurance for only cruise part of the travel.
When requesting quote, should the Departure Date be the day you leave home or the day of cruise enbarkation?

Same thing for Return Date - Should the day be day of cruise disembarkaton or when u return to home?

The insurance customer rep says I should put in the full trip dates even if I buy insurance just for cruise part but the quote is coming higher for same dollar amount I paid for the cruise.

I would think that if you want the insurance to cover incidents related to your flights (e.g.lost luggage, trip delays) then you would have to include those dates as part of the policy. If the only coverage you care about is the emergency medical and repatriation then maybe only the cruise dates but I think the insurance CSR would know best. You'll need to read the policy fine print very carefully.

Looking online at a few of the insurance policies specifically designed for cruises, they all seem to say that the trip starts and ends when you leave/return to your home, not when the cruise starts/ends.

If the insurance agent (it's not a rep or csr, it's a licensed agent) has said you need those dates of effective coverage, you need to go with that. Insurance policies are written (by design) to have loopholes to deny coverage. If you are shopping third party insurance to save money, but have misrepresented yourself, any claims can be flat denied.

Trust your agent, even though you think he or she is just a call center worker (they are not).
