Starbucks/EPCOT mug pulled because of Purple Monorail

Walt Disney World is pulling one of its exclusive new Starbucks coffee mugs sold at Epcot, because the mug's design includes one of Disney's monorails with a purple stripe.

The controversy: Disney's Monorail Purple was involved in a deadly 2009 crash in which Monorail Pink backed into the purple train, killing its pilot, 21-year-old Austin Wuennenberg.

I remember the accident, and I often think of it with sadness while waiting for the monorail. However, I didn't remember the color of the monorail.

Surely they will redesign the mug and release the new design.

I think about it... Honestly, anytime I get on Monorail Teal or Monorail Peach, I think to myself "this monorail is made up of those monorails in the crash..." I know people who flat out refuse to ride Monorail Teal.

I remember the incident and I remember the colors, but I didn't really even think about the mug. I was planning on purchasing a mug during our upcoming trip. I really liked the colors they used. Hopefully, they will redesign the mug and it will look just as nice.

Well, the monorails are referred to by color. E.g., "monorail coral" or "monorail blue."

But I would have thought it was merely the color theme of the mug, not that it was specifically referencing monorail purple.

I am not insensitive to the monorail disaster at all, but in all honesty, have not 'linked' the color to my memory at all. When I think of the disaster, it's the 'monorail', not a particular color. Too bad they're changing the color, I love purple!

Really can't believe that someone in the 'know' designing the mugs didn't catch this before actual production - now, of course, the collectors are in 'full mode'!! $$ signs!!

I bought one of these on the 26th before they were pulled. Purple is my favorite color. Did not even think about the color of the monorail. Guess I have a collectors item now. I wonder how many were sold? There were 2 others on line with me that night also getting the mugs.

Maybe a condition of the settlement with the family of the victim. We will never know if that is the case because those are normally not ever made public.

I doubt it had anything to do with any sort of settlement, its pretty common in major transit organizations to renumber vehicles that were involved in serous accidents if they can be salvaged.

WHEW! I had already decided these mugs were my must-buys for our June trip!

I too didn't remember the color of the fateful monorail.
