Hi everyone, I need some help in planning a Stag n Doe, some may call it a Buck n Doe, or even a Jack n Jill.... No matter what you may call it, I need help in planning a successful one. To those of you who may not know what one is, it is a fundraiser event held for the bride and groom prior to them getting married.

Any suggestions? We will be having a raffle table, ( we have some awesome prizes )

I want to do games other than the typical Crown and Anchor, black jack, etc.
Any suggestions to help make this event very successful?

I threw a fairly sucessful Jack and Jill for a friend a few years ago.

Here's my tips:

Limit your selection of drinks to a few signature drinks (i.e. 2 different beers , 2 coolers and 2 signature mixed drinks). Leftover, opened bottles of liquor or opened cases of beer can't be returned and are a big waste of money.

I choose to serve a meal and then put out snacks. I got lasagnas on sale at M&M's and served them with caesar salad & leafy salad with an oil and vinegar dressing, and rolls and butter. I then put out chips, cheesies, etc after dinner. This was by far cheaper than going the sandwich, salad, cheese, pickle, etc route because I could plan better and have fewer leftovers (i.e. I estimated the number of servings of lasagna and went from there). The meal was included in the price of the entry ticket (which was $10). I also had a cake brought out about 1 1/2 after dinner was finished.

I rented a legion to hold the party and saved money because I did my own clean up prior to the party and clean up after the party. I stuck to basic decorations - streamers, balloons, curling ribbon, plastic table cloths, fake flowers. The legion also had coloured lights and a disco ball so I made sure to turn both of those on.

I got a friend with a good stereo system to play the music and had everyone in the wedding party contribute CD's (I made sure to put a sticker on each one to specify who's was who's).

To raise money, I did a 50/50 draw, a liquor bottle draw, crown and anchor and a "butterfly board" (the bride had a thing for butterflies but you could use any symbol). I took several large bristol boards and printed off a couple hundred of the same butterfly but in different colours (I actually coloured them with markers - but then again, I'm crazy). On the back of each butterfly was a prize listing - I had bought some small cheap stuff from the dollar store (candy was actually a big hit), a few better items, and then a couple of really great prizes. As well, to fill them out, some of the butterflies listed free tickets in the 50/50 or liquor draws. Guests could purchase a butterfly for $3 each or 2 for $5. They would then go up to the board and choose the butterfly based on the front (not the prize listed on the back). Once it was lifted off the board, they found out what prize they had been awarded. This made quite a bit of money.

Basically, I approached it as a big party with a few money making ideas. The number one goal was for everyone to have fun; the number two goal was to ensure that the party didn't actually cost me an arm and a leg; goal number three was to provide the bride and groom with a little something (the bride had actually said to me she didn't care if they got money from it - she just wanted it in place of a bachelor party).

If you make it seem like a money making event disguised as a party, people won't have fun (and less fun = less money spent)

If you make it seem like a party disguised as a money making event, people will have more fun (more fun = more money).

I definately like your idea of the type of food you had, simple yet delicious.. Easy to put out and clean up after....

and I really like the butterfly idea..... Thanks a bunch for your input...

Sorry, I wish I could help. but an event to raise money for someone's wedding would probably not be well-received here on the West Coast  The only area I've ever heard of doing these is Ontario :confused3

I think the PP's idea sound fun! What about some casino-type games to be played with fake money (that people can "cash in" for 50/50 tickets, etc.)?

you can do a "toonie toss" where you mark a spot on the floor and put a Bottle of booze on the floor, the people have to do a toss and the person closest to it wins the bottle. This will bring in oodles of money.
Another option is selling jello shooters, you can buy the paper cups for them at a party shop (1 oz) and make them (instead of using a cup of cold water you use half a cup of cold water and half a cup of booze *vodka) mix them in a juice jug with a spout to be able to pour into cups easily. We always made our in the am of the stag n doe but you can do it the night before, when the boys were putting the beer in the fridge the girls made the shooters.
Gold fish races are also kind of popular and can place bets etc on them. Placing a big pickle jar (4L) at the bar filled with water and a shooter glass in it, if the person gets the loonie or toonie in the shot glass then they get a free drink...this seldom happens so it's basically a profit!
I would suggest the meat and bun idea and dont worry about a cake. People more go to have fun, drink booze and don't end up eating alot! We bought 15 dozen buns and cooked eye of the round roast and had it sliced, cooked a large black forest ham and sliced it and then just bought a bit of summer sausage. This is much cheaper than buying other food. It's up to you but to me it goes over much better then a big meal close to the end of the night.
If I think of any other ideas I will let you know.
Good luck, ps where do you live?

Another idea is the card game, tape a deck of cards on to bristol board and pick out a card sell the cards" for $2 each (like a 50/50), another idea is to buy a bunch of scratch cards and place on a bristol board sell the tix for them for 2 bucks or more each as well, have this as a draw for the tix.

We are in Niagara, thanks for the ideas, We already have a Texas mickey to use for the toonie toss....

Lolipop sales

buya bunch of lolipops & sell them for $1.00 ea, or whatever the price & stick them in a styrophom board. Colour the end sdifferent colours. Each coour is a different prize.

So you don't have to buy special prizes make the prizes raffle tickets for the raffle draw. Make most of them 2 free tickets, make some 5 free tickets & even a couple at 10 free tickets.

The pie in the face contest works as well. Set up 2 jars at the bar (1 for the bride, 1 for the groom), the one that collects the most money gives the other one the pie in the face...of course the bride to be wins.

good luck

tim

From what I have heard from previous coworkers, is that Jack & Jills are even bigger in Winnipeg than they are in Ontario. Sometimes attracting over 400 people.
I have always seen the toonie toss well received. But I have not been to many & personally did not have one for our wedding.
Good luck & have fun!

If you are liking the jello shooter idea ... when we had our stag & doe, our wedding party used liqueurs instead of straight vodka. The straight vodka ones were pretty strong unless you diluted it with water. Instead they used whiskey sours like the sour apple. They tasted like candy but with a huge kick. For my sisters stag & doe we made 500 and sold out within an hour! We also put whipped cream on them.
