We're doing the 5-star St. John excursion in the morning and plan to go to into town in the afternoon.

How long is the walk from the dock to town? Is it better to take a cab... and are they readily available at the dock in the early afternoon?

If you want to see downtown for the sake of seeing downtown, take a taxi. It is $3/pp each way. If all you want to do is a little shopping, you can do that at Havensight Mall, adjacent to the dock. The same merchandise is available there.

You have a point, Jiminy! DW and I have been to Charlotte Amalie several times, but our DS15 hasn't been there since he was 4. We thought it'd be nice for him to see the town, instead of just the Havensight mall.

Is there a good bar and cigar shop at Havensight? Maybe I'll change my mind!

Is it worth it? Really a matter of personal taste. I think downtown has far more personality than Havensight Mall. But others don't like it because it has "too much character". Others feel hassled because the taxi drivers will solicit you for your return trip to the ship. Not a big deal to me, but that really bugs some people. I went downtown and didn't regret that I did. But it wasn't a highlight of our day there. It's worthwhile doing if you have 2 or more hours prior to sailing.

Dave:

So what was the highlight of your day there?

We walked from town to the ship. It took about 30 minutes, but we were not walking fast, rather strolling liesurely. There are no facilities or water between the two, so make sure that you have taken care of this before leaving town. I wouldn't walk without water, especially int he summer (that's when we did it, and we went through 3-4 bottles of water on the walk.)

Although you do go right by the low income housing, and an abandoned Ramada Inn, as long as it's day light it is perfectly safe. Biggest problem is that the sidewalk ends on the one side of the road and there is no crosswalk to get to the other side, so we made a run for it--those island drivers are CRAZY!
