St. Martin: Regatta? Kayak?

Was all set to book the "12 Metre Regatta" excursion when I noticed that somewhere along the line the description on DCL website has been updated to read: "No sailing experience is necessary, but is VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED" (emphasis mine).

Very highly? I was planning on me (dad) and 12 year DD. Neither of us have any experience at all. Are we taking on more than we can handle? We want adventure not trauma!

Kayak looks interesting too, but never seem to see anything about it on these boards. Anyone have any experience with it good or bad?

Which would you choose between the two?

We were on the 6/26 eastern and did the 12 metre regatta in St.Maarten. There were 4 of us. 2 adults, a 17 yr old and a 13 yr old. What an experience. My opinion is to absolutely do the regatta. We had no experience either and had an incredible experience. My daughter (13) was a "winch wench" and had a blast. After the race she was given the helm and steered the ship! You wouldn't be taking on too much. These guys are great at placing you with duties that will not overwhelm you but will challenge you to be a part of the experience not "viewing" the experience. You can kayak anywhere but racing the Stars & Stripes (or the Canada II) is a once in a lifetime adventure! It was truly one of the highlights of the trip. DON'T miss it!

DO THE REGETTA. You do not need any experience. You can be as active or uninvolved as you want. DD, 12 at the time, was the timer. DW was the Captain, DS 16 and I were crankers.
My wife picked this excursion, it is something I NEVER would have done on my own in a million years. It is the best excursion I have been on in 7 cruises.
