Kathy-
I'm so glad it wasn't as bad as they originally thought. It still sounds like he will have a long recovery. I'll continue to keep your brother in my prayers.:hug:

THANK YOU to all of my wonderful DIS friends. I just got home from the hospital after Bob being in surgery for over 3 hours and my being up at the crack of dawn to go downtown for my annual mammogram.

Good news on both counts. The mammogram was perfectly clear and no sign of the cancer returning (so four years since my cancer surgery and all is well!).

Bob did NOT have to have any part of his intestine or bowel removed. The doctor scraped away a lot of the scar tissue, mended some of it, unwound the intestine that was slightly wrapped and removed the mesh netting in his stomach. He had this mesh netting from his double hernia operation in 2004. Because he has lost over 250 pounds since his heart problems a year ago February, the mesh net had no where to "stretch and stay attached" and therefore unattached and was sitting in the middle of his stomach and caused the intestine problem. Unfortunately, he will always have scar tissue which occurs when you have any type of stomach surgery and there is no guarantee this will NOT happen again. But the problem has been rectified and we can only hope and pray that it does not occur again.

He will be in the hospital anywhere from 3 days up to two or three weeks until his bowel is functioning the the draining has stopped (he has two drainage tubes in his stomach). Once home, it will be six - eight weeks before he can lift anything over five pounds or do any excessive exercising, walking, etc.

I'm going to try to check a couple of threads and go to bed...I'm exhausted.

Thank you all again for the prayers and the hugs. Love you all.

Truly wonderful news, Kathy! So happy for you and your brother. But what an incredibly stressful day you had.

Wow Kathy, first of all great news on four years without the cancer!!! :woohoo:

Secondly, even though it was still some tough surgery, and there is still a ways to go with the recovery, I know everyone is happy that it was not as bad as it sounded. I'm so glad prayers were answered and the doctors had the wisdom and guidance to find the real problem and take care of it. I know you are all relieved about the news and hopefully you will get some well deserved rest tonight!!! :thumbsup2
 and much  my Dear, and I will continue to keep everyone in my thoughts and prayers until your brother is back on his feet again!

My thoughts exactly! Well said, Marvali.:thumbsup2

Kathy, your news made my morning - I am so happy and grateful the mammo was clear!!!:cheer2: Your brother's surgery is also wonderful news and our prayer will be with him as he recovers. After my recent surgery the not lifting more than 5 lbs had to be extended from the 6 to 8 weeks to 4 mos, so please encourage him not to be tempted to lift more as he heals and feels better. :thumbsup2

Hope you had a good nights rest. Love ya, my friend!!

Wonderful news on your mammogram Kathy  I can only imagine how relieving that must be :goodvibes And great news too regarding your brother
Now get some well deserved rest :goodvibes

Kathy, I am so happy to hear the wonderful news for you and your brother. I pray his recovery will be on the quicker side and smooth.

Have a wonderful day! :sunny:

Hey Kathy,

You know, I should just start planning for off time on the boards from Nov/Dec through Feb/Mar... done it twice now :p. However, as you can probably note by my typing this, I've come back around again. And this time, with a trip planned again.

And, even more amazingly, the trip is from 22 Sept through 01 Oct! (Although, as of right now, I'm not staying at CSR this time around... but that's subject to change).

Between you and Lisa, I have a ton of catching up to do, just thought I'd poke in to say hi :)

Hurray Kathy for the 4 cancer free years!! :cheer2: May you have many, many, many, more cancer free years. :goodvibes:hug:

That is fantastic news about your brother. I'm hoping he'll have a speedy recovery. My mom was in the hospital for about 4 days after her surgery until she had a movement and they decided to release her. I'm hoping your brother will be just as lucky. I'll continue to keep your family in my prayers.

Now that's some WONDERFUL news!!!

Congratulations on being cancer free! :yay: :woohoo:

....... and your brother's successful surgery! Now go and catch your breath and relax for a while!

Excellent news all around! I'll be praying that your brother has a smooth recovery.

Now that roof better follow suit with good news. :goodvibes

All I can say is WOW! I am so happy your brother had a successful surgery. I can certainly understand how his weight loss could have that impact. I hope his recovery is going smoothly.

He certainly sounds like he has had some bad luck lately. Is he on medicaid now? Does he have any prescription coverage? Please see if he can find a sympathetic practitioner who can look at his medications and prescribe as many as possible off the $4 Walmart or Target list.

I take care of under served people on a regular basis and I make sure I order from this list whenever its possible. A lot of cardiac meds are on the list. Sometimes there is medication in a group of similar medications that can be ordered off the list. I absolutely hate when someone doesn't take the time to make sure a patient can get as many of his meds as possible at the most economical price.

Your brother is certainly to be commended for his weight loss.

I hope he finds himself in good health soon.

Thinking of you! Hugs to your brother!

What wonderful news!

I will continue to keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.
