SSR Developer Points

There sure is a lot of intricate rules to learn. :rotfl:

Mind if I intrude on this thread to ask what are developer points, I already gather they've got lots of 'intricacies,' but what are they?

Yeah, I'm thinkin' about buyin' into a DVC. :lmao:

Developer points are a one time bonus deal with (some) AKV purchases through Disney. They are not administered in the same way as your normal points, so it seems to a new owner that they are learning 2 different points systems. They've been offering the Developer points because otherwise you would be buying AKV Kidani points that cannot be used before May 2009.

Basically think of your SSR Developer points as points that you must use at SSR or DL (California) by a certain date. (You might be able to make a II trade outside DVC, but that is less guaranteed and introduces another system)
The developer points cannot be banked transferred or combined with your normal points which leads to the 'intricacies'

I think most new owners will try to use their developer points to book a "bonus" stay at SSR or DL before they get into their "normal" points usage. If that bonus timeframe does not work, the new owners may try to rent out their SSR stay as a "points rental"

They have actually been given with SSR purchases, too, before SSR was "sold out."

They are an incentive, not a "compensation" for Kidani not being open yet. They were offered long before Kidani was an issue. And since the exact same issue is currently the case for BLT and they are not offered for those purchases, it is clear that an unopen Kidani has nothing to do with it.

It is true that developer points cannot be banked, borrowed, or transferred; however, they can be combined with regular points. Of course all the regular restrictions still apply, but they can be used with regular points.

The misinformation on these boards can be almost as problematic as the good information can be insightful. I respectfully and strongly suggest that people confirm the answers you get by reading your contract!!!

I was just trying to keep it simple for new owners.
Yes, I knew they were offered with SSR and Jambo, but that was not relevant for new owners today..
Yes, Incentive is a better word.

How can the developer points get combined with regular points? While after May, you might be able to, say, reserve 1 SSR weeks' rooms on Developer points and the second week's stay with your regular AKV points, and have MS "join" the reservations together, I did not think it would be possible to combine say 5 leftover Developer points with 10 AKV points for making the reservation of one 15 point night. If you can, and I'm wrong, I apologize.

Again, the rules may have changed but I was able to use 8 developer points and 10 regular points for a single night that took 18 points total when I used mine last May. This one night was part of a single reservation that included four nights of regular points, two nights of developer points, and the one mixed-use night. This all had to be done by the "specialist" at Member Services who works with developer points. I have read similar reports from others who have done the same thing, so I do believe that this is still an option. But I do acknowledge that it is possible that this is one of many things that DVC has changed recently in their newly issued developer points.

These changes are why I caution people to read their own contract to be clear what as to what their points' terms are.

I am going to have to check into this in the morning...I am concerned if you are correct...This topic never even crossed my mind....I thought I could combine my developer points with my regular points at SSR to make a longer reservation...I have 200 developer points and 282 SSR points to use this use year...I planned to to use my 200 developer points, and then take an extra 9SSR points to make a reservation for 5 nights at SSR...My hope is to use the rest of my SSR points at another resort (switch to another DVC resort after the 5th night)...

Now, I agree that you could not use your extra developer points at SSR to make a new reservation at another resort with your remaining points...

But I did not get from the language in the contract that you cannot make a reservation at SSR with a combination of regular and developer points...That could be a real big problem for me.

Do not just take my word for it. I based my comment on hearsay (I thought by other reputable posters) So I could very well be wrong. The previous poster did mention that a specialist in developer points at MS may be needed. The specialist may be the key, so you may have to fight through the MS chain to get the correct result.

Hey, thanks for pickin' up this discussion, as another poster said, the intricacies are confusin', but I have to agree, read the contract and pay attention to the details.
