I just found out today that I was approved for ssdi. It only took 3 years and a lawyer:sad2:. Since I have a a DS7 he will also get a benefit. I know that I have read before that children receiving a ssdi benefit because of their own disability that the parents need to account for the spending of the benefit. My lawyer said this doesn't apply to my son's benefit. Does anyone know from experience? DH wants to take DS's benefit and put it in his 529 plan but that technically benefits DH. TIA.

i've been on ss disability for a number of years and i use my son's for his college savings and when he wants something special. once a year you will get a form that you fill out to account for how the money was used, for example, you list any savings or investment accounts, and you have to split up how much went to what. it's no big deal and takes a couple of minutes. the main thing social security will tell you is that it must be used for the "care and comfort of the minor child". hope this helps :goodvibes

So when you get the form do you list that you put the money in savings?

the form is pretty short, just front and back of a page, and i think it says something like "how much of $ was used for savings" and then gives you a place to list the details. as the designated representative for your son, you can do as you see fit with the money so i wouldn't worry about your husband wanting to put in a college plan. that is after all for the benefit of your son and to be honest, no one is going to question you :)

hope this answered your questions!

I have gotten this form for 10 years. Every year, I just say that the total amount went for the care of the child. I have never had a problem.
