Somewhere in the small print it says that the rule of 4 does not apply to the member cruise.

Not sure about the above statement. The member website shows this:

What is the Rule of Four?
You cannot book and travel on The Disney Collection (excluding Disneyland® Resort Hotels in California), Concierge Collection and Adventurer Collection vacations within the last 4 months of your Use Year. However, you can travel in the last 4 months of your Use Year as long as you've booked your stay more than 4 months before the end of your Use Year.

Then the website lists DCL as part of The Disney Collection. So I believe the Rule of Four applies even to DCL.

What the rule of four means is that you cannot make a reservation during the last four months of your use year. That means you cannot make a reservation between August through November and stay at the above listed places at short notice for those same months.

It does not mean you cannot make a reservation to do the 2010 member cruise next September using the banked and new year's points.

I think you should ask MS about this matter as they can look at your points and confirm when you can use them and whether or not the rule of four applies.

Sorry, I mixed it up with the $95 transaction fee, which usually applies to DCL bookings with DVC points but is waived for the member cruise:

Disney Vacation Club will waive the initial transaction fee associated with booking your Disney Cruise Line reservation for the S.S. Member Cruise 2010.

As for the "Rule of 4", it probably still doesn't apply, since the booking window is more than 4 month away from the travel date, so you do not book AND travel in the last 4 month of the same Use Year.
